GBPAUD Down To Triangle Support, Breakdown Or Bounce Next?

GBPAUD is testing critical support at 1.9000 as its descending triangle pattern nears completion.

GBPAUD has been trading inside a descending triangle since early July, with lower highs connected by a falling trend line while price found repeated support along the horizontal floor near the 1.9000 major psychological mark.

The pair is now testing this triangle support for the third time, and how it reacts here could set the tone for the sessions ahead. The horizontal support zone around 1.9000–1.9028 has already proven its significance, having cushioned declines on at least two prior occasions since mid-August.

A bounce off this floor could see GBPAUD attempt another run back up toward the descending trend line resistance near 1.9100–1.9150.

However, a decisive break and close below 1.9000 could confirm the descending triangle breakdown, which typically projects a measured move equal to the height of the formation. Given the triangle’s roughly 300-pip span from its widest point near 1.9300 down to the 1.9000 floor, a confirmed breakdown could open the door to a slide toward the 1.8700 region or lower.

On the moving average front, the 100 SMA has slipped below the 200 SMA, reflecting the broader bearish bias that’s been building since the descending pattern took shape. Price is also trading below both indicators, reinforcing the idea that sellers currently have the upper hand, with the moving averages likely to serve as dynamic resistance on any recovery attempts.

Stochastic is turning higher from the oversold region, hinting that a bit of bullish pressure could return in the near term, potentially fueling the bounce off support. That said, RSI remains below the midline and hasn’t shown the same conviction, suggesting sellers haven’t fully relinquished control just yet.

If the triangle support holds, GBPAUD could see a corrective bounce toward trend line resistance. But a clean break lower would likely confirm the bearish continuation pattern, setting the stage for the measured-move selloff scenario to play out.
