Gold is being influenced simultaneously by demand for safe-haven assets, expectations for Federal Reserve interest rates and US dollar movements. In the short term, it matters whether fresh US inflation data prompt a more hawkish stance from the US central bank.

Uncertainty remains over the Fed’s next move. US inflation accelerated to 3.7% year-on-year in September, while core inflation stood at 2.6%. Meanwhile, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh gave no clear signal of another rate hike in October, easing investors’ concerns about further tightening.

Tensions in the Middle East and concerns over public finances are supporting demand for safe-haven assets. At the same time, rising oil prices could sustain inflationary pressures and complicate any move by central banks towards policy easing.

The fundamental backdrop for XAU/USD on 16 October is mixed. A weaker US dollar, lower bond yields and ETF demand support gold, while rising US inflation and the risk of a Fed rate hike limit further gains. The focus remains on fresh signals from the Fed and movements in government bond yields.

Technical Analysis

On the H4 chart, gold completed a downward wave at 4,071 USD before forming an upward correction towards 4,184 USD. The market is currently continuing to consolidate below resistance at 4,231 USD. The main trend remains downward, but local structure allows the next upward move towards 4,220 USD. A close above this level would open the way for a move towards 4,231 USD. A break below the range would open the way for a decline towards support at 4,123 USD, with scope for the downward wave to continue towards 4,060 USD and 4,022 USD. The MACD indicator shows recovering positive momentum, but the signal line remains below zero, indicating that the current rise is corrective.

On the H1 chart, the market broke above 4,145 USD and developed upward momentum towards resistance at 4,185 USD. The price is now consolidating near 4,175 USD while attempting to continue higher. A close above 4,185 USD would open the way towards 4,220 USD, where buyers are expected to face a test. An alternative scenario envisages a return to 4,145 USD, followed by a decline towards 4,123 USD. A break below this support would increase the likelihood of a downward wave developing towards 4,060 USD. The Stochastic oscillator’s signal lines are above 50 and pointing up, confirming buyers’ short-term advantage. At the same time, the indicator’s approach to overbought territory increases the likelihood of a short-term correction before the next move. The priority scenario remains a test of the upper boundary of the current range, followed by an assessment of the market’s reaction to resistance.

Conclusion

Gold is navigating a mixed backdrop shaped by safe-haven demand, Fed uncertainty and US dollar movements. While US inflation accelerated to 3.7% in September, Fed Chair Warsh’s lack of a clear signal on an October rate hike has eased concerns about further tightening, supporting gold. A weaker US dollar, lower bond yields and ETF demand further support the metal, though rising oil prices and lingering inflation risks limit further gains. Technically, gold is in an upward correction within a broader downtrend, with resistance at 4,185 USD and 4,220 USD, and support at 4,145 USD and 4,123 USD. A break above resistance could open the way towards 4,231 USD, while a break below support would open the way towards 4,060 USD and 4,022 USD. The near-term direction will depend on Fed signals and movements in bond yields.
