The global eyewear industry is seeing significant upward market trends, with a report from Data Bridge showing that it’s projected to reach $194.72 billion by 2029. This market covers products such as sunglasses, eyeglasses, and contact lenses, which are currently growing in demand. The primary drivers for eyewear are the increasing concerns for eye protection against ultraviolet (UV) rays and addressing the prevalence of vision-related disorders across the globe.
With this, some eyewear brands are stepping up to cater to the growing consumer demand, which also results in substantial business growth. Such is the case with industry leader EssilorLuxottica, an eyewear company that is noted for its sound growth in 2023, particularly in the third quarter of the year.
Business movements that set up big wins
The company EssilorLuxottica is home to a number of widely recognized eyewear brands that are popular for fusing trendy styles with practical function. This includes leading brands such as Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Vogue Eyewear, Costa, and Arnette. While the eyewear offered by EssilorLuxottica are already household names that have been tried and tested by consumers throughout the years, the company continues to make smart business initiatives to bolster their success.
Earlier in 2023, EssilorLuxottica had a press release announcing the renewal of their licensing agreement with department store chain Target, allowing them to operate and manage their Target Optical outlets. The partnership first began in 2004, but the renewed multi-year agreement provides important business opportunities for EssilorLuxottica as Target is listed as the seventh largest retailer in the US, with 566 optical outlets.
In line with this, EssilorLuxottica has also seen considerable growth through its international ventures. The company made big waves in the Oceania region, as OPSM sunglasses are a big hit in Australia. As a brand, OPSM is dedicated to providing eyewear that can accommodate the different lifestyles and requirements of consumers. Australia is also exposed to some of the highest UV rates in the world and popular OPSM frames such as the Arnette Fastball, Ray-Ban Wayfarers, Oakley Half Jacket can be fitted with the newest lens technology to protect wearers. As a result, consumers are drawn to the protection provided by OPSM eyewear, further contributing to the company’s growth. Case in point, financial reports published earlier this year by EssilorLuxxotica reveal that OPSM helped bump up the region's revenue by over 7 per cent from the previous year.
Q3 milestones
Following the business movements initiated by EssilorLuxottica, the company recently published a press release showing that their consolidated revenue for the third quarter peaked at €6.3 billion ($6.68 billion) and is up 5.2 per cent compared to last year. The biggest sales contributor is the company’s professional solutions (wholesale segment) and direct-to-consumer overall, which also helped their international ventures to reach a wider market of consumers. This is a testament to EssilorLuxottica’s dedication to providing eyewear that satisfies consumer demands, while providing them with a breadth of options to complement personal preferences without sacrificing functionality.
With the company’s current success, EssilorLuxottica continues to take a bold and transformational approach with their initiatives. One of their most notable partnerships of late is with Meta which saw the launch of the next generation of the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses in Q3 of 2023, which were considered a commercial success. Furthermore, the accomplishment of the partnership for smart glasses also boosted the stocks for Ray-Ban, leading to greater business success for EssilorLuxottica. The smart glasses are currently trending, according to news sites like The Verge and ZDNET, which poses significant growth opportunities for EssilorLuxottica in the upcoming year.
Growth for the near future
For their upcoming projects, EssilorLuxottica announced in a press release that they acquired an exclusive licensing agreement to design, produce, and distribute Moncler eyewear. This comes at a time when Reuters reports that the luxury retail market is experiencing a slowdown that is expected to carry over into 2024. However, with the company’s resilience and innovative approach to eyewear, it can be expected that it can overcome market downturns and changes within the industry.
