In 2017, more than two-thirds (39%) of high school students who took the ACT didn’t have the English skills needed to successfully complete a college course. Each year, high school graduates arrive at college and are expected to take remedial course in English or math, to make up for what they didn’t learn in highschool. Even so, after college nearly half (44%) of hiring managers struggle to find recent grads with proficient writing skills.
Written communication has always be a key component of career success. But as technology advances and more companies let workers choose to work from home, employers are placing even greater emphasis on the ability to write well. After all, if all your office communication happen in Slack or via email, you’ll need to be able to communicate clearly using the written word.
Despite the importance of writing proficiency, college essay assignments serve and even greater purpose. Most professors agree that the process of writing an essay, from early research to the final draft, is learning experience in and of itself. By writing essays, students have a chance to practice the critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills that will vital to their future careers.
