Stocks closed up September as a mixed bag, as traders digested fresh economic data and look forward to Friday's jobs report. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index for August increased 3.4% year over year, but slid from July's reading of 3.7%. The Nasdaq traded up over 60 points and was the only index to eke out a monthly win. The tech-heavy index also managed to check off a positive Q3 alongside the S&P 500, while the Dow fell for both the day and quarter. The blue-chip index also snapped a five-month win streak, with investors now look ahead to the final quarter of 2026.

Oil Prices Log Banner 3rd Quarter

Oil prices turned higher Wednesday as traders weighed stalled peace talks between the U.S. and Iran. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude added 1% to settle at $90.42 per barrel for the day, slid 0.1% for the month, and surged 33% for the quarter.

Gold prices finished with modest wins as elevated energy prices overshadowed softer-than-expected inflation data. December-dated futures gained 0.2% to settle at $4,186.70 per ounce on Wednesday, closed September down 5.6%, and gained 3.5% for the quarter.
