Current Report: Main Street Capital Could Gain 13.9% Next Year

Main Street Capital offers a projected 13.9% total return, driven by a 5.75% dividend yield and expected price gains.

Main Street Capital (MAIN) was founded in  2007 and is headquartered in Houston, TX.

MAIN is a principal investment firm, or Business Development Company, that primarily provides customized long-term debt and equity capital to lower middle market companies and debt capital to private companies.

Three key data points gauge MAIN (or any dividend-paying entity):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Those three keys also indicate if any company has made, is making, and will make money.

MAIN Price

Main Street Capital’s single share price dropped by $0.68, or 1.2%, falling from $56.92 to $56.24 in the past year, per Monday’s opening market report.

Eight analysts cover the stock and set a one-year price target $3.62  higher at $59.86

However, MAIN’s past three-year price progression from $39.30 to $56.24 shows an average annual gain of $5.65. I’ll use the median of the analyst and three-year price gains (that is $4.64) as a prediction for the coming year’s returns. I’ll use that $4.64 number to calculate returns after I discuss MAIN’s dividends.

MAIN Dividends

Main Street Capital has paid variable monthly dividends since September 2008.

The most recent M dividend of $0.265 per share was paid October 15, 2026 (to shareholders of record October 8th). The total annual dividend of $3.18 yields 5.75% annually (per Monday’s opening market report)

MAIN Returns

Putting it all together, as of November 2nd, a possible Main Street Capital gross gain of $7.82 was projected.

To get there, our $4.64 per share calculated annual price gain was added to a $3.18 presumed forward-looking annual dividend to make that $7.82 gross gain.

A little over $1000 invested in MAIN at Monday’s $56.24 opening price would buy 18 shares which multiply the hypothetical $7.82 gross gain to $139.05 for the coming year, or about 13.9%.

By the way, a dividend dogcatcher guideline is to only buy initial shares of a dividend stock that pay an annual dividend (from $1000 invested) that is more than the cost of one share.

Main Street’s projected annual dividend from $1K invested is $57.50, and that annual dividend proves to be  $1.26 more than its Friday $56.24 single-share closing price.

The exact track of Main Street Capital’s future share price and dividend will entirely be determined by market action and company finances.

Remember, the best way to track stock performance and dividend payments is through direct ownership of company shares.
