The company was founded in 1889 and is headquartered in Spokane, WA.

Avista Corporation (AVA) is an electric and natural gas utility business operating Avista Utilities and Alaska Electric Light and Power Company segments.

Three key data points gauge Avista (or any dividend-paying entity):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Those three keys also indicate if any company has made, is making, and will make money.

AVA Price

AVA’s single share price increased  $5.11 (or about 13.7%) from $37.31 to $42.42 in the past year, per Monday’s opening market report.

Seven analysts cover the stock. Their median target price predicted no gain in price in the next year. However, 2 years of price history shows an average $3.87 annual price gain, which I’ll use for an annual return, after I discuss dividends.

AVA Dividends

AVA has paid quarterly dividends since March, 1999.

The most recent Q dividend of $0.4925 will be paid June 12th (to shareholders on record as of May 19th) and the resulting annual $1.97 payout yields a forward-looking 4.64% (per Monday’s opening market report.}

AVA Returns

Putting it all together, as of June 8th, a possible gross gain of $5.84 was projected. The $3.87 per share estimated annual gain was added to the $1.97 forward-looking annual dividend.

A little under $1000 invested in AVA at Monday’s $42.42 opening share price would buy 23.5 shares, which multiply the $5.84 gross gain to $137.67 for the coming year, or 13.77%.

My dividend dogcatcher rule is to only buy initial shares of a dividend stock that pay an annual dividend (from $1000 invested) that is greater than the cost of one share.

AVA’s projected annual dividend from $1K invested is $46.40. So AVA shows a dividend from $1,000 invested of $3.98 over its $42.42 single share price as of Monday’s opening price.

The exact track of Avista Corporation’s future share price and dividend will entirely be determined by market action and company finances.

Remember, the best way to track stock performance and dividend payments is through direct ownership of company shares.
