The Visa Spending Momentum Index is a key measure of U.S. consumer health, tracking trends in spending behavior. A reading above 100 indicates strengthening momentum, while a reading below 100 suggests a slowdown. Currently, the index sits just under 100, pointing to modest softening in consumer activity. Before 2020, the index consistently remained above 100, reflecting steady spending growth. However, since 2022, momentum has noticeably weakened, highlighting a more cautious consumer environment. Even so, the current level does not yet signal significant economic distress, suggesting that overall economic conditions remain relatively stable.
