In recent years, higher education has become a strong focus in the state of Kentucky. Because of this focus, the Kentucky Student Success Collaborative (KYSSC) was born, pushing for a stronger overall education system. Since its conception in October of 2021, the collaborative has helped to uncover the true value of higher education in the state.
Studies have shown that at least a bachelor’s degree leads to increased workforce participation, improved financial security, and decreased participation in public benefit programs. These benefits contribute to Kentucky’s goal of improving their workforce and economy and reaching 60% of the population with a postsecondary credential by 2030.
In recent years, progress has been made, but challenges still remain in enrollment numbers and degree attainment in the state. Because of these shortcomings, the KYSSC partnered with the James Graham Brown Foundation. This financial support and other grants have created unmatched momentum for change in the state. Thanks to this partnership, basic student needs are now able to be better met, improving transfer pathways and increasing gateway course success. This also has a strong positive impact on enrollment retention.
Although the KYSSC’s work is still early in its efforts, the importance of their work is clear. With continued financial support from partnerships, the future for the collaborative and the students it supports is surely bright.
