Disney's (DIS) "Captain America: Civil War" earned $181.8M in its U.S. debut during the weekend of May 8, coming short of sky-high predictions for a potential $200M-$210M.
The third entry in the "Captain America" series marks the fifth-largest opening in domestic box office history and nearly doubles the $95M debut of 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."
The superhero sequel stars Chris Evans as the eponymous Captain while also expanding its ensemble cast with the additions of Iron Man, Spider-Man, and other super-powered members of the Marvel comic universe.
"The Jungle Book," also from Disney, added $21.9M versus estimates of $20M-$24M. "Mother's Day," from Regal (RGC) and AMC's (AMC) Open Road Films, grossed $9M in its second week of release, accelerating past its $8.3M opening during this namesake holiday weekend.
Rounding out the top five were Comcast's (CMCSA) "The Huntsman: Winter's War" and Time Warner's (TWX) "Keanu" with a respective $3.6M and $3.1M. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include 21st Century Fox (FOX), Sony (SNE), Lionsgate (LGF) and Viacom (VIA).
