It may not be widely known but Canada has a far higher immigration rate and a more highly educated immigrant stream than the United States.
In fact, the two countries have long pursued quite different immigration policies.
Despite the recent tightening up on immigration into the US, America still admits immigrants based mainly on family reunification, while the Canadian government gives priority to economic-based immigration applications, such as skilled worker and investor applications.
Post-graduation work and immigration options for international students in the U.S. have been sharply reduced by the Trump Administration, with many graduates effectively forced to leave the country soon after graduation.
These unhappy individuals take with them their ideas, creativity, and know-how and use it elsewhere — and often they turn to Canada.
In turn, the U.S. loses out on a potentially high-earning tax base. As well, the ability of the US to attract new international students has been sharply curtailed because of Trump’s anti-immigration policies.
In contrast, Canada offers its cohort of international students something that is not available, or more difficult to obtain, in other countries — a post-graduation work permit for up to three years.
