Can Employers Fight The Opioid Epidemic?

Providing a path to rehab instead of firing is crucial.

In 2017, the opioid crisis hit epidemic levels with further outbreaks that have affected more than those who abuse drugs. Prescription drug abuse is a huge contributing factor in this epidemic, but unfortunately it is not always easy to identify. As opioids continue to create a growing concern in America, employers are able to implement prevention and recovery services to create a positive impact on the crisis.

Two in three HR professionals say that their workplaces has been or will be impacted by drug abuse. Workplaces can implement policies in order to create a safer work environment for everyone and discourage actions that lead to injury, arrest, and life threatening overdoses. Drug screening cannot detect medications that are prescribed to employees and therefore is not the only action employers should take when trying to combat the opioid crisis. One of the most effective ways employers can help is by simply educating their employees. Many people who struggle with drug abuse fear losing their job. Workplaces can implement a framework that mentors, supports, and emphasizes the care from the employers. This can help ensure employees that there are opportunities to reach help without losing the job that supports them.

If the opioid crisis is going to end, employers as well as policymakers must take responsibility and involve themselves. Learn more about what businesses can do to stop the opioid crisis from affecting their workplaces from this infographic from US Drug Test Centers.
