The pandemic has brought new attention to nursing homes and the need to protect vulnerable seniors, but nursing homes are facing another growing crisis: kidney disease. In the United States, 80% of patients with end stage renal disease are above the age of 65, and 70% require ongoing dialysis treatments. The available treatment options are designed to meet the needs of middle aged, active adults and often ignore the needs of a growing nursing home populations - 86% of nursing home residents are prescribed conventional dialysis treatment.
This treatment requires them to travel to an outpatient clinic 3 days a week, usually by ambulance. Treatments take 3-4 hours, plus travel time and can be disruptive, confusing, and stressful to many nursing home residents. Outpatient treatment exposes the patient and other residents to a greater risk of infection.
