Solar electricity can reduce the amount of power you buy from the grid and help your home use more renewable energy. However, the cheapest-looking quote is not always the best value. The design of the system, the condition of your roof, the quality of the installation and the assumptions behind the savings estimate all matter.
If you are planning to buy solar PV panels in Ireland, use the following ten-point checklist before requesting or comparing quotes. It will help you ask better questions and recognise when two apparently similar proposals are not actually offering the same system.
1. Understand what PV panels are
Before comparing products, clarify what the technology does. What are PV panels? Photovoltaic panels convert daylight into direct-current electricity. An inverter then converts that electricity into alternating current for use by ordinary household appliances. Solar PV is different from solar thermal, which uses sunlight to heat water.
The terms pv solar panels, solar pv panels and pv panels are often used interchangeably. In a quote, however, look beyond the panel label. A complete system may include modules, mounting rails, cabling, an inverter, monitoring equipment, electrical protection, labour and commissioning. A battery or hot-water diverter may be optional rather than included.
SEAI explains that a typical module is approximately 1.8 metres by 1 metre and weighs around 20 kilograms. That information is useful when checking whether the proposed array will fit your roof and whether access, lifting and structural considerations have been properly assessed.
2. Check the roof’s condition and available space
A good installer should inspect the roof rather than size a system from a quick online estimate. Ask whether the roof covering, timbers and fixings are suitable for a PV installation. Solar panels can last for more than 20 years, so replacing a roof shortly after installation could create avoidable cost and disruption.
Measure the usable area, not simply the total roof area. Chimneys, skylights, roof windows, vents and dormers can reduce the number of panels that fit. Also check whether the panels will be placed on one roof face or split across several faces. The quote should show the proposed layout, not just a system size in kilowatts peak (kWp).
3. Assess orientation and shading
A south-facing roof is often favourable, but it is not the only workable option. East- and west-facing roofs can produce useful electricity, particularly when household demand occurs in the morning or afternoon. The key is to understand how orientation affects annual generation and the timing of that generation.
Shading deserves specific attention. Trees, chimneys, nearby buildings and roof structures can reduce output. Ask the installer to explain the shading analysis and whether the design uses optimisers or separate inverter inputs where appropriate. Do not accept a generic estimate based only on your county or postcode.
4. Use your electricity consumption to size the system
One of the most important questions is: how many pv solar panels do I need? The answer depends on annual electricity use, when you use electricity, roof area, orientation, shading, budget and whether you plan to add a battery, heat pump or electric vehicle.
Give prospective installers at least twelve months of electricity bills if possible. A household that is empty during sunny working hours may export more electricity than a household that runs appliances during the day. The best design is not automatically the largest array. It should be sized around realistic demand and the amount of electricity you can use on site.
Ask each company to state the panel wattage, total kWp, estimated annual generation and assumptions used. This makes it easier to compare quotes fairly and prevents a sales discussion from focusing only on the number of panels.
5. Compare the full pv panel installation cost
Searches for pv panels Ireland cost, pv panel installation cost and pv panels Ireland can produce broad price ranges, but an online average cannot account for every home. Scaffolding, roof access, long cable runs, consumer-unit upgrades, difficult roof layouts, batteries and electrical work can change the final price.
Request an itemised quotation. It should identify the panels and inverter, mounting system, monitoring, labour, scaffolding, certification, grid-connection paperwork, VAT where applicable, and any optional equipment. Confirm whether the price is before or after a grant. A low headline figure may exclude a battery, optimisers, meter work or remedial roof work that another company has included.
The quotation should also state the expected annual generation and explain the calculation. Treat payback figures as estimates rather than guarantees because electricity prices, household behaviour, weather and export payments can change.
6. Verify the installer and contract
For a grant-supported domestic installation, check that the company is on SEAI’s registered Solar PV Companies list. SEAI recommends getting at least four quotes, checking references and speaking with previous customers. Registration is an important eligibility and compliance check, but SEAI does not approve, guarantee or warranty a company’s work.
Do not rely on a verbal promise. The contract should name the equipment, system size, scope of work, total price, payment stages, estimated installation date, warranties, after-sales support and responsibility for paperwork. It should also explain what happens if the survey reveals roof or electrical issues.
Ask who will complete the electrical work and what certificates you will receive. A reputable contractor should be willing to explain testing, commissioning and handover documentation in plain language.
7. Check grant eligibility before work starts
Grant rules can change, so confirm the current position directly with SEAI rather than relying on an old article or a salesperson’s assumption. At the time of writing, SEAI’s domestic solar electricity grant page states that eligible homes need an MPRN and must have been built and occupied before 2021. It also says that grant approval must be in place before work begins.
The current SEAI page lists a grant of €700 per kWp up to 2 kWp, €200 for each additional kWp up to 4 kWp, and a maximum of €1,800. These amounts and conditions should be checked again before you sign because schemes may be revised.
Read the grant offer carefully. If you change the installer, system size or type of installation after approval, contact SEAI before work starts. Keep the invoice, declaration of works, certificates, BER documentation and other completion records needed for payment.
8. Compare panel, inverter and battery specifications
Panel efficiency is only one part of performance. Compare the rated output, temperature characteristics, product warranty and performance warranty. Ask whether the quoted annual generation uses the exact panel model being proposed.
The inverter is equally important because it converts the panels’ DC electricity into AC electricity. Check its capacity, warranty, monitoring features, location and replacement terms. If you may add a battery later, ask whether a hybrid inverter is being proposed or whether a future battery would require a second inverter and additional work.
A battery can store excess daytime generation for later use, but it is not automatically the best financial choice for every household. Ask for separate payback estimates with and without storage. Also consider alternatives such as shifting appliance use into daylight hours or using a hot-water diverter.
9. Ask how export and self-consumption will work
Solar panels generate electricity in daylight, with much of Ireland’s annual production occurring between May and September. You save most when you use the electricity yourself, so ask the installer how the design supports self-consumption. Monitoring can help you identify when to run a washing machine, immersion heater or other flexible load.
Excess generation may be exported to the grid. Ireland’s Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) provides a route for eligible renewable generators to receive payment from an electricity supplier for excess electricity exported to the grid. The payment rate, eligibility process and meter requirements should be confirmed with your supplier. Do not base the entire business case on export income; compare the value of using electricity in your home with the rate available for exported power.
10. Confirm maintenance, warranties and after-sales service
Solar PV systems generally need little routine maintenance, but you still need a clear support plan. Ask who will respond if the inverter shows a fault, monitoring stops working or a panel is damaged. Confirm whether labour is included when a component is replaced under warranty.
Get the panel product warranty, performance warranty, inverter warranty, battery warranty and workmanship warranty in writing. Check the exclusions, claim process and whether the manufacturer or installer remains responsible if the installation company closes. Request an operation and maintenance manual, system diagrams, commissioning results and instructions for shutting down the system safely.
Final checklist before you request a quote
When you buy solar PV panels, prepare your recent electricity bills, BER details, roof information and a list of future loads such as an EV or heat pump. Then ask at least four registered companies for comparable, itemised proposals. Each quote should show the system layout, annual generation estimate, equipment models, total price, grant assumptions, warranties, contract terms and after-sales arrangements.
The right system is not necessarily the biggest or the cheapest. It is the design that suits your roof, electricity use, budget and long-term plans. By checking these ten points before you get a quote, you can compare small pv panels or larger arrays on a like-for-like basis and make a more informed decision about solar PV for your Irish home.
