Encompassing a broad range of technologies and human interaction, the metaverse is the hot new buzzword in town. As of 2020, the metaverse had a $47.69 billion market value and is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years. The key growth driver is a rising focus on the converging digital and physical worlds via the internet.
One aspect of the physical world currently being integrated into the metaverse is pets. Humans love their pets, and the idea of bringing them along into the metaverse is compelling. There are 2 approaches under consideration: metapets and metaverse pets. A metapet is an avatar representation of a real pet created with holographic imaging. Meanwhile, a metaverse pet is a fictional animal avatar for those unable to physically own an animal. Both are building on Tamagotchi and Webkinz’s footsteps in an attempt to occupy the fast-growing, seemingly niche metaverse pet market.
