Time Warner's (TWX) "Sully" earned $35.5M in its U.S. debut over the September 11 weekend, beating expectations for $25M-$31M. The biographical drama, which stars Tom Hanks in a retelling of commercial pilot Chesley Sullenberger's emergency landing on the Hudson River, received an A in audience polls from CinemaScore, holds an 84% approval rating on reviews aggregator RottenTomatoes, and was produced with a reported budget of $60M. In foreign markets, the film took $9.5M.

Box Office Runners Up:

Sony's (SNE) domestic thriller "When The Bough Breaks" debuted at $15M, landing at the mid-point of the $12M-$18M forecast and already recouping its $10M budget. Meanwhile, Sony's "Don't Breathe" and Time Warner's "Suicide Squad" grossed a respective $8.2M and $5.7M.

Rounding out the top five, Lionsgate's (LGF) "The Wild Life," an animated feature loosely based on the classic novel "Robinson Crusoe," opened at $3.4M against a budget of $13.5M.

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Comcast (CMCSA), Viacom (VIA) and Disney (DIS).
