Disney's (DIS) "Doctor Strange" topped the U.S. box office in its second week of release, earning $43M over the November 13 weekend against expectations for $40M-$42M. The latest addition to the Marvel Comics cinematic universe dipped roughly 49% from its $85M debut, beating the 60% second-weekend drop of "Captain America: Civil War." In foreign markets, "Doctor Strange" took $60.2M.
Box Office Runners Up
Fox's (FOX) "Trolls" maintained its grip on second place, earning $35M versus estimates of $27M. Taking third place, Viacom's (VIA) "Arrival" debuted at $24M, nearly outpacing forecasts of $18M-$25M. The film, an Amy Adams-led science fiction drama, received a B in audience polls from CinemaScore, holds a 93% approval rating on reviews aggregator RottenTomatoes, and was produced with a reported budget of $47M. "Arrival" grossed $10M in international territories.
Rounding out the top five, Comcast's (CMCSA) "Almost Christmas" opened at $15.6M while Lionsgate's (LGF) "Hacksaw Ridge" added $10.8M in its second weekend. Other publicly traded companies in the space include Sony (SNE) and Time Warner (TWX).
