A Look at the Asphalt Economy

Did you know that asphalt is the most recycled material on Earth? It’s true, with asphalt being used for so many different construction projects, whenever it needs to be replaced, recycling companies take it away to be used again! Asphalt is a 100% renewable construction resource and recycling it not only benefits the planet, but also saves taxpayers billions of dollars a year.

 

So how is asphalt recycled? The cycle begins with asphalt being used in projects like roof shingles or paving highways. Once the asphalt has reached the end of its “life”, meaning it is damaged and needs to be replaced. It’s picked up by a recycling company. These companies put the asphalt through a rigorous extracting process that separates the usable asphalt from extraneous waste. The new asphalt that is extracted is resold to providers for paving, shingling, or other uses and the cycle begins again!

 

This cycle is a very useful practice in protecting our planet from the impact that manufacturing asphalt can have. It also keeps millions of tons of waste from being left in landfills each year and saves taxpayers billions.
