Alpha Picks Review

Alpha Picks is a data-driven stock recommendation service operated by Seeking Alpha, designed to help investors build a market-beating portfolio through a rigorous, quantitative stock selection process.

Launched on July 1, 2022, and led by the Seeking Alpha quantitative analysis team, the service delivers two high-conviction stock picks per month, selected from a universe of approximately 5,000 U.S. equities and evaluated against five core investment factors.

Alpha Picks Features

Two Stock Picks Per Month
Subscribers receive one new pick on the first trading day of each month and a second on the 15th, or the closest trading day thereafter. Each pick is accompanied by a detailed research article produced by the quant team.

Quant-Powered Stock Selection
Every pick must carry a Strong Buy quant rating for at least 75 consecutive days before selection. The rating system evaluates value, growth, profitability, EPS revisions, and price momentum relative to sector peers.

Sell Alerts and Active Portfolio Management
Subscribers receive email alerts when a stock is downgraded to Sell or when a new pick is added to the portfolio. If a stock is rated Hold for 180 consecutive days, it is automatically moved to Sell and removed from the portfolio.

Full Portfolio Access from Day One
New subscribers gain immediate access to all active Alpha Picks, currently more than 30 stocks, along with the full historical performance record and closed positions.

Exclusive Webinars
Alpha Picks members have access to webinars hosted by the Seeking Alpha quantitative team, covering portfolio strategy, stock selection methodology, and market analysis.

How Alpha Picks Works

Stock Selection Criteria
To qualify for inclusion, a stock must meet all of the following conditions at the time of publication: a Strong Buy quant rating held for at least 75 consecutive days; U.S. common stock status (no ADRs); not a REIT; a three-month average market capitalisation above $500 million; a stock price above $10; and no prior recommendation within the past 12 months.

Sell Discipline
A position is closed if the quant rating falls to Sell or Strong Sell, if the rating remains at Hold for 180 consecutive days, or if the company announces an M&A event in which it is the acquisition target.

Letting Winners Run
A stock is classified as a winner when it doubles from the purchase price. For winners, a Hold rating lasting 180 days triggers a partial sale of the initial investment only, with the remaining position held until a Sell or Strong Sell rating is issued.

Concentration Risk Management
If any single position grows to represent 15% of the total portfolio, it is trimmed to 10%. The proceeds are distributed on an equal-weighted basis across the remaining holdings.

Alpha Picks Quant System

Five-Factor Methodology
The quant algorithm evaluates stocks across value, growth, profitability, EPS revisions, and price momentum, comparing each company against its own sector rather than the broader market. Stocks with the strongest collective scores across all five factors are awarded a Strong Buy rating.

Daily Refresh
Ratings across the full 5,000-stock universe are updated every day. Factor grades reflect the most recent financial data, including consensus forward revenue and earnings estimates from professional analysts.

Led by Steven Cress
The quant system was developed by Steven Cress, who joined Seeking Alpha following its acquisition of his firm, CressCap Investment Research, in December 2018. Cress has over 30 years of experience in equity research and quantitative strategies, and previously ran a prop trading desk at Morgan Stanley before founding his own quant hedge fund.

Alpha Picks Performance Track Record

As of April 10, 2026, the Alpha Picks portfolio has returned +316.61% since its July 1, 2022 launch, compared to +79.99% for the S&P 500 over the same period.

Performance is calculated on a time-weighted basis, consistent with Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS), using opening prices on pick dates and closing prices on sell dates. Dividends are reinvested. Returns are independently verified by S&P Global.

Individual winners within the portfolio have included positions that returned over 1,500%, with the portfolio's sell discipline and concentration management rules contributing to those gains being realised in part rather than fully surrendered in drawdowns.

Alpha Picks Portfolio Strategy

The service is designed for buy-and-hold investors targeting long-term capital appreciation. It does not require frequent trading and is not structured around dividend income generation.

Sector concentration is not managed explicitly; if multiple stocks from one sector rank highest on the five core factors simultaneously, the portfolio may become temporarily concentrated in that sector. This reflects genuine fundamental momentum rather than a top-down allocation decision.

The target holding period is at least one year, with a target trading frequency of two to three transactions per month.

Who Is Alpha Picks For?

Buy-and-Hold Investors
Alpha Picks is suited to investors who want a low-maintenance, rules-based portfolio built around long-term capital growth. The service removes the need for daily research by delivering pre-selected, data-vetted ideas each month.

Premium Subscribers Seeking Stock Ideas
Investors already using Seeking Alpha Premium who want a curated shortlist of high-conviction ideas, rather than conducting their own full screening process, will find Alpha Picks a direct complement to the platform's existing tools.

Important notes
  • Alpha Picks covers only U.S. common stocks. No ADRs, REITs, or ETFs are included.

  • The service is not designed to generate dividend income and does not focus on income-oriented investing strategies.

  • Sector concentration can occur at certain points, which may not suit investors with strict diversification requirements.
