You, on the other hand, may feel like this hand-held computer you are holding is more confusing than intuitive. Since you probably can’t keep a kiddo by your side throughout the day to help you navigate your new smartphone, it’s important to figure out some of its cool and helpful bells and whistles on your own.

Get Your Phone to Hush Up

If you are in the middle of your niece’s wedding or at an important meeting, the last thing you want is for your smartphone to stop ringing — and for you to be unsure how to stop the noise. Fortunately, you can instantly silence your phone by pressing any key on the side; it will still be “ringing” and the call will not be cut off, but it will be silent.

Enlarge the Words on the Screen

There is an easy hack for enlarging the screen of an iPhone; this will help you to read tiny print and not have to search for your readers every time you want to use your phone. Tap on Settings and then General and Accessibility. This should allow you to now double tap the screen with three fingers and then pan around using your trio of digits.

Turn Your Phone Into a Magnifying Glass

Picture this: You are at the grocery store and are trying to read the long list of teeny tiny printed ingredients on a box of cake mix when you realize you left your reading glasses at home on the counter. You can easily turn your smartphone into a magnifying glass by using its camera. Pretty much every smartphone is equipped with a camera these days; for example, the iPhone SE features a 12 MP iSight Camera that features focus pixels — all the better to read that fine print. Tap on the Camera icon on your SE’s home screen, hold your phone over the box of cake mix and then use your fingers to “swipe out” on the image and enlarge it; using this zoom feature should allow you to clearly see the ingredients, even without your specs.

Learn to Do a ScreenShot

Let’s say you are planning on visiting your friend Betty who lives in the country. Betty just texted you very detailed instructions on how to get to her home, and you want to easily access it when you and your spouse are driving to her place without scrolling through tons of old texts. By capturing the text as a screenshot, you can quickly find it in your photo gallery. As TC Crocks notes, if you have an iPhone, press and hold the Home button along with the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the phone; you should hear a sound like you just took a photo, and the picture will be in your camera roll. You can do the same thing on an Android by holding the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time; this will save Betty’s text to the Captured Images folder.
