Why Does Use of Oil Energy Persist Worldwide?

Date: Thursday, July 4, 2019 9:20 PM EDT

Oil, we all know about it and we all use it in some capacity.

With global warming constantly in the news, the consistent usage of fossil fuels is often mentioned as a huge factor in the issue.

But, despite there being many energy solutions and alternative energies out there, oil still remains king. But why you may ask?

Well, we’ve broken it down for you below.

Issues with Solar

While solar power exists, and many businesses are trying to resort to the use of solar as much as possible, it would seem that there are still issues with using this.

While many places across the world have sun throughout the year, other places, such as Europe, during winter, simply don’t. Because of this, many companies are still focusing on oil usage to keep their business going. Also, with the impact of global warming sending the seasons all over the place, relying solely on solar isn’t practical for many.

Uptake

One of the reasons the use of oil is still so widespread is because of the slow uptake on other forms of power. While companies across the globe are trying to adapt and use energy such as wind and solar power, it costs a lot of money to update current systems, and because of this it’s taking time, and in the meantime, the tried and tested use of oil continues.

More vehicles

As the world population continues to grow and grow, so do the number of vehicles on the road. Because of this, the use of oil continues to increase due to diesel and petrol relying on oil. There are currently 1.2 billion passenger cars in use and 98% of these rely on oil, and this is set to rise to two-billion by 2035.

First-time consumers

While you may think that the whole world has been oil crazy for decades, that’s not the case. While Americans consume more than 2.6 gallons of oil products every day, much of the world doesn’t.

In fact, over 50% of the world’s oil is used by just 17% of its population and 83% of the world is underdeveloped. These countries are only now starting to gain access to oil like America, and as their consumption increases, oil usage will not only continue, but increase. The addition of 800 million cars to the world between 2010 and 2030 is projected by these countries.

After all, if the current oil loving countries are still only moving into other forms of energy, it could be decades before these countries do.

From what you can see, oil has been king in the west for some time, but as the west attempts to change this, other countries are only just starting to get their hold of oil. Because of this, it would appear that oil, whether we like it or not, will continue to be used constantly for many years to come – or as many as it’ll allow.
