A "hands-on" guide to applied equity analysis and portfolio management

From asset allocation to modeling the intrinsic value of a stock, Applied Equity Analysis and Portfolio Management + Online Video Course offers readers a solid foundation in the practice of fundamental analysis using the same tools and techniques as professional investors. Filled with real-world illustrations and hands-on applications, Professor Weigand's learning system takes a rigorous, empirical approach to topics such as analyzing the macro-finance environment, sector rotation, financial analysis and valuation, assessing a company's competitive position, and reporting the performance of a stock portfolio.

Unlike typical books on this subject―which feature chapters to read and exercises to complete―this resource allows readers to actively participate in the learning experience by completing writing exercises and manipulating interactive spreadsheets that illustrate the principles being taught. The learning system also features instructional videos that demonstrate how to use the spreadsheet models and excerpts from the author's blog, which are used to depict additional examples of the analysis process. Along the way, it skillfully outlines an effective approach to creating and interpreting outputs typically associated with a top-down money management shop ― including a macroeconomic forecasting newsletter, detailed stock research reports, and a portfolio performance attribution analysis.

  • Covers topics including active and passive money management, fundamental analysis and portfolio attribution analysis
  • Companion streaming videos show how to use free online data to create yourown analyses of key economic indicators, individual stocks, and stock portfolios
  • A valuable resource for universities who have applied equity analysis and portfolio management courses

Practical and up-to-date, the book is an excellent resource for those with a need for practical investment expertise.

From the Inside Flap

Praise for Applied Equity Analysis and Portfolio Management

Professor Weigand's book is the clearest description of how to evaluate and pick stocks that I've read. The professional tools he provides are useful, and accompanied by intuitive, commonsense explanations. Whether you want to talk more intelligently with your financial advisor, become one yourself, or just dabble in the stock market, this book will help you achieve your goals.

—Ken Kroner, Head and Chief Investment Officer of Scientific Active Equity, Blackrock, Inc.

I have been professionally practicing in the investment management business for 34 years. Many clients have asked my advice for a guide, a book to study that encompasses the essence of solid investment processes. Dr. Weigand's book is that resource: it captures both the art and science of the discipline, while taking today's demanding investment environment into consideration.

—William Greiner, CIO of Mariner Wealth Advisors and BusinessWeek's 2005 "Stock Market Strategist of the Year"

Simply put, Rob Weigand's Applied Equity Analysis and Portfolio Management is a masterful work. His "learning system" is a potential game changer for anyone who is serious about investing, including students, investment advisors, financial planners, and experienced investors. He writes with great clarity and provides a complete package to ensure a successful learning experience. Based on my analysis, this book is an unqualified "buy."

—H. Kent Baker, CFA, University Professor of Finance, Kogod School of Business American University

I found Dr. Weigand's learning system to be insightful, clear, and directive. His "learn by doing" style of teaching has not only captivated and inspired talented students, but has been very instructional for seasoned professional investors as well.

This book is a game changer.

There is not another book or learning tool on the market that packages as much value, easy-to-follow, understandable analysis and supplemental materials that can be manipulated to fit your needs.

The text is well written. There is no filler. Difficult concepts are broken down into short, easy to understand sections. The reader is given a step-by-step analysis on how to value stocks, synthesize what is going on in the market, and how to capitalize on this information. However, the genius behind this book is that it's not just a book; it's a learning tool.

When you buy the book you are given access to a multitude of spreadsheets, graphs, and reports that can be manipulated to fit your own portfolio and stock valuation needs. These resources cannot be overlooked; they give the reader the ability to do what financial professionals do: model stocks and determine their true fundamental value. These resources are designed for the reader to value as many stocks as you want. The valuations and accompanying narrative (buy or sell recommendation) contained within an attached report can then be printed (the materials are already properly formatted for printing) and presented to a client, financial professional, or an investment group in a clear and concise manner. Additionally, each chapter is covered in video lectures that are narrated by the author. I'm the type of person who needs to hear concepts in order to understand them so this feature is particularly helpful.

At this price point, purchasing this book is a steal.

superb. 2 chapters were required reading for Chartered Market Technician. I like this book so much I plan to read all of it. It focuses on fundamental analysis and valuation but it's very pithy, very well-written, very practical, comes with practice exercises and answers. So far I think it's a gem. Also, Weigand suggests reading Malkiel's book A Random Walk...also very good. I thought based on the title that it would be boring but so far it's quite enjoyable and for me that's saying a lot.

'Applied Equity Analysis and Portfolio Management' is unlike any other textbook I have read. As a student I found it to be extremely easy to follow and understand. At the same time, the problems contained within each chapter were challenging and pushed me to explore the outer areas of my thinking. I highly recommend this book to teachers, students, and anyone desiring to have a deeper understanding of the financial market.

Professor Weigand truly does a service to investors with this excellent book. He gets straight to the point in each chapter without the filler most other books have. The reader can easily follow along by downloaded the free spreadsheets from wiley's website and can also watch over 7 hours of videos. There are videos and spreadsheets for each chapter!
In my opinion, there are I would say 3 parts. The first is a chapter on the bigger economic picture. He discusses all the important statistics, how he asses them and how you can keep track of these via free sources and the spreadsheet. I believe this is important in order to help determine how aggressive you will be with your investments. The second part are chapters on historical analysis, analysing he company and forecasting the income statement and balance sheet in order to determine the value of a stock. He does this step by step and you can again follow along and use the spreadsheets. The final chapter (part) is on portfolio risk and performance attribution.
Note that the book does not go into the depth of McKinsey's Valuation but at the same time it is not a basic/beginners book. That is one of its positives I believe. The spreadsheets are easy to follow and are key to the learning process. By getting your hands dirty you start to think about the company and the drivers instead of just filling in the blanks. As you do so, you can better understand value and can adjust the calculations to your liking. That is why I recommend this book. It engages the reader and gives him tools that he can build on.
