Smells that make you feel happy

Date: Wednesday, March 13, 2019 6:04 AM EDT

All of us love the good smell. In fact, it is the innate human ability to enjoy good smells and even feel refreshed about it. Pleasant smells put a smile on your face and give a general feeling of happiness.  A lot of research has gone into understanding the link between good smell and human emotions.

One such study in Kyoto University went deep into understanding the Japanese custom of taking a walk through pine-filled forests. Known as Shinrin-yoku or forest bathing, this is an ancient ritual that was believed to improve the mental health of people. This study concluded that depression and anxiety went down greatly when people walked through pine forests and inhaled the aroma of these trees.

There are many other studies too that corroborate the relationship between smells and happiness. Here are some smells that have a big impact on our mind.

Citrus

If you're feeling down and depressed, grab that citrus fruit from your refrigerator or counter-top and smell it.  Vitamin C presents in these fruits boost energy, focus and give an overall positive feeling to your mind.

In some ways, this rationale also applies to add the scents of citrus fruits like lemon to dishwashing soap. It was believed that the fresh smell of citrus fruits would take the frustration of doing boring jobs like cleaning pots and pans. Get more information about Pop over to these guy on this link.

Fresh grass

Research in Australia showed that people felt relaxed and even happy when they were near freshly mowed lawns. Every time you cut fresh grass, it gives out smell, and this fragrance is also believed to reduce mental decline.

So, the next time you decide to mow your lawns or see someone mowing, go and stand next to that fresh smell and inhale it. You will feel the difference right away.

Roses

Flowers have always been associated with good mood and feelings of happiness. Maybe the practice of giving bouquets could have come from this association. Rose gives a calming effect, and some studies even show that it has a romantic effect on the brain.

Rosemary

Herbs like rosemary are known to boost brain power. It is believed to have the ability to make people remember many events including complex tasks.  It also explains why we add it to our pastas, as the very smell of it can increase our mental ability to think and remember.

Mint

Both peppermint and spearmint are magical herbs that are not only good for blood circulation, but the fresh smell of these leaves triggers a lot of emotions in humans.  Firstly, it makes you feel happy and brings a smile on your face. Besides, it stimulates your mind and body by increasing alertness and focus.
