Metals And Miners: Potential Strategy
Metals and miners are moving higher and the first scenario in the Weekend Newsletter has taken center stage. Several members are wondering what to do. So, I put together a short-term strategy for those that feel like they can no longer wait.
Miners Nearing Key Resistance
Miners are approaching key resistance levels, and they are entering another timing window where a top could form.
Six Weeks Of Dollar Bears - Are We Due For A Sharp Reversal?
Prices closed lower for the sixth consecutive week, and the stochastics indicator is oversold. Six continuous weeks is the longest prices have declined without an intervening bounce since 2010. Probabilities favor a relief rally.
US Dollar Is Still Searching For A Low
The US Dollar is still searching for a low, and precious metals and miners won’t correct until the dollar bottoms. The potential downward spike unwound after prices formed the bullish engulfing reversal pattern.
Gold, Silver Still Sluggish While Dollar Is Overdue For A Bounce
Gold prices formed a weekly bearish engulfing pattern. We are still expecting a low next week. A sharp decline into an 8-year cycle low is unlikely. It would take prices breaking below the $1,124 level to restore that potential.
Dollar Continues To Fall As Gold Rises
Gold and silver both closed right at their 10-day EMA’s, not enough to mark the top. It looked like their fates were sealed, but eager buyers came in to rescue them.
Miners Lagged Slightly Today
Gold and Silver rallied to new cycle highs, but miners lagged slightly. We should have seen high volume 6%+ days in miners with gold decisively above $1,200. Instead, we got moderate volume and selling on strength numbers in GDX.
Gold, Silver, And Miners Are Extending Their Cycles Higher
The miners should gap up higher this morning. Prices should seek out cycle highs this week.
Gold Rallied Above $1,200
Gold rallied above $1,200 Thursday, but there hasn’t been any follow-through. We may get some short covering if prices rally back above $1,208 today or tomorrow.
Gold And Silver Made New Cycle Highs Today
Gold and Silver made new cycle highs today, and that should secure a right translated cycle. My only concern is miners. They are yet to make fresh cycle highs, and I’d like to see them do so before starting a correction.
Good Entry Coming For Metals And Miners
Evidence supporting a major low is mounting, and it should be safe to accumulate long-term positions during the next pullback. The current cycle should top sometime next week followed by a correction into the first common cycle low.
Gold Miners Backtracking After Breakout
Miners are backtracking after yesterday’s breakout; prices may be attempting to fill the gaps before continuing higher. Prices closing below their 50-day EMA’s next week would seriously dispute yesterday’s breakout.
Miners Break Through Resistance
Miners broke through key resistance in climactic fashion, indicating that a significant bottom may have formed.
Breakout In Miners
The action in miners today is very telling. Prices gapped up and sliced through resistance like a hot knife through butter.
Watching The Gold Miners
It is still unclear if precious metals are dropping into an 8-year cycle low. A sharp decline in silver below $15.68 would provide confirmation. Until then, we have to keep an open mind.
HUI:Gold Ratio
The HUI:Gold ratio closed above the 50-day EMA and broke the downtrend, supporting a potential bottom. Breaking above the 0.174 high established in November will confirm a low in miners.
