How new gaming breathes life into old classics

Date: Thursday, June 27, 2019 2:21 PM EDT

Worth an estimated $135 billion worldwide, it's no surprise the gaming industry now sits very firmly at the top table in the world of finance. As we head into the second half of 2019, gaming's future is looking extremely bright. There's the growth of esports, the constant flow of blockbuster titles, the mind-blowing innovations pushing the industry and the streaming capabilities of services (such as Google Stadia): gaming is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

While you could be forgiven for assuming the world of gaming is forever looking forward, searching for new mountains to climb, the truth is much of gaming's success comes from its ability to take inspiration from years gone by. For many, a love of gaming comes from a childhood of first experiencing different games. It's that nostalgia that fuels many of those 35-and-over gamers.

New lease of life

This certainly hasn't gone unnoticed by modern developers, with many games from a bygone age having been remastered and reworked into new formats in recent years. These reviews of the best online casinos for Canadians will lead you to a host of classic casino games that have been reworked into modern titles. Whether it's blackjack, poker, slots or roulette, you're now able to play a seemingly endless supply of games.

From the likes of Pac-Man to Duck Tales, Space Invaders to Doom, these old games provide the player with all the latest gameplay quality along with the classic elements of the old game that first grabbed them when they were younger. This is a reason behind the continued success of franchises such as FIFA, Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy, all of which have evolved over the years and have developed huge global fanbases over the course of more than 20 years.

Even board games have been given the modern gaming treatment. Monopoly is one of the most popular board games to have made the move into the gaming world, maintaining the magic that has made it such an iconic game over the years but now attracting a whole new audience.

A Generation Game

The arrival of current gen consoles back in 2013 was a catalyst for many publishers to start dusting off those classic games they'd left at the back of the cupboard and seeing if they couldn't, in fact, make them even better than they once were. There were then more remastered games in the last half a decade than we came across in decades before.

Old fans are now able to enjoy games from their childhood while at the same time establishing a whole new generation of new gamers who enjoy playing these old games. And the spike in popularity these classic games are currently enjoying puts pressure on the shoulders of developers working on new games. It remains to be seen whether and how far this retro trend will continue.
