Daily Stock Pick: The Andersons

A portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3, 2019, named Volio, will eventually hold 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Today Im reviewing the first of five consumer defensive sector stocks primed to join Volio as the fifth of five representing the sector. One of the stocks I discuss this week could be the forty-ninth overall selection for Volio!

My subject today is a small cap food distribution company named, The Andersons Inc. Its trading ticker is (ANDE). This is my first report on The Andersons Inc for this Volio portfolio.

Andersons Inc is a diversified agriculture company that conducts business in North America. The company's operations are segmented into grain, ethanol, plant nutrient, and rail.

The grain group operates grain elevators and generates income through buying and selling grains and space leasing. The grain division contributes over half of the company's revenue.

The ethanol division purchases and sells ethanol, offers facility operations, and invests in ethanol plants.

The plant nutrient group manufactures, distributes, and retails agricultural and related plant nutrients.

The company's rail segment leases, repairs, and sells railway facilities.

The Andersons, Inc. was founded in 1947 and is based in Maumee, Ohio.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like The Andersons Inc (ANDE):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

These three basic keys best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

ANDE Price

Andersons' price per share closed at $14.22 Friday.A year ago their price was $25.69.The price has fallen $11.47 or over 44.6% last year.

Assuming Andersons' stock trades in the range of $10 to $20 this next year, its recent $14.22 price might rise by $0.78 to reach $15.00 by August 3, 2021.

ANDE Dividends

Andersons' most recent declared quarterly dividend was $0.175, was paid July 22nd. That equates to $0.70annually and yields 4.82% at yesterday's $14.22 share price.

ANDE Gains?

Adding the $0.70 annual estimated dividend to my $0.78 optimistic estimate of Andersons' price upside shows a $1.48 potential gross gain, per share, to be reduced by any costs to trade the shares.

If we put little under $1,000.00 today in The Andersons Inc we would buy 70 shares of ANDE stock.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost us about $0.14 per share.

Subtract that $0.14 brokerage cost from my estimated $1.48 gross gain per share results in a net gain of $1.34 X 70 shares = $93.80 for a 9.4% net gain on a $995.40 investment.

Thus, The Andersons Inc (ANDE) shows a possible 9.4% net gain including a 4.92% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past performance and supposition. Only time and money invested will tell if The Andersons Inc (ANDE) is worth it.
