Daily Stock Pick: Trinity Industries (TRN)

A portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3 is named Volio. It will eventually hold 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Today I'm reviewing the third of five industrials sector stocks striving to join my Volio folio. This could be the nineteenth pick for Volio!

That industrials sector includes twenty-three industries all related to designing, fabricating and servicing stuff we want and use. The industrials industries range from aerospace and defense to waste management with all the transportation, business services, and equipment required in between.

My subject today is a mid-cap railroad company named, Trinity Industries Inc. Their trading ticker symbol is TRN. This is my first ever report on TRN.

Trinity Industries, Inc. provides rail transportation products and services in North America. It operates through three segments: Railcar Leasing and Management Services Group, Rail Products Group, and All Other.

As a diversified industrial company. The Company owns businesses providing products & services to the energy, transportation, chemical, and construction sectors.

The company sells or leases products and services through its own sales personnel and independent sales representatives.

Trinity Industries, Inc. was founded in 1933 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend-paying equities or funds like Trinity Industries Inc (TRN):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest, or not.

Those three basic keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

TRN Price

Trinity's price per share closed at $21.54 yesterday. A year ago its price was $21.13. So, in the past year, its price improved by $0.41, or almost 2%.

Assuming Trinity's stock trades in the range of $18 to $27 this next year, its recent $21.54 price could rise by $1.46  to reach $23.00 by January 8, 2021, assuming upward price momentum returns.

TRN Dividends

Trinity's latest declared quarterly dividend was $0.19 per share payable January 31st.

That $0.19 Q dividend equates to $0.76 annually and yields 3.53% based on yesterday's $21.54 closing price.

TRN Gains?

Adding the $0.76 annual estimated dividend to my $1.46 optimistic estimate of the Trinity Industries Inc price upside shows a $2.22  potential gross gain, per share, which will be reduced by any costs to trade these shares.

As for costs, if we put a little under $1,000.00 today in Trinity Industries Inc at its recent $21.54 price, would buy 46 shares of TRN.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost us about $0.22 per share.

Subtract that $0.22 brokerage cost from the estimated $2.22 gross estimated gain per share leaves a net gain of $2.00 X 46 shares = $92.00 or a 9.2% net gain on a $990.84 investment.

Therefore, Trinity Industries Inc, whose trading ticker symbol is TRN shows a possible 9.2% net gain including a 3.53% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to learn if Trinity Industries Inc, is worth your time and money.
