It Took Apple Just 72 Hours To Become The Largest Mobile Payment Offering

It took just 72 hours for Apple (AAPL) iPhone 6 owners to activate more than 1 million credit card accounts.

That has made it the largest mobile payment offering out there by now, already exceeding what has taken Google (GOOG) months to deliver.

Google uses a more basic payment system that substitutes a card number for a virtual MasterCard used for the transaction. It's not as secure as the token-based system used by Apple and adoption has so far been lackluster.

There is also a difference in terms of privacy, Apple doesn't see all of the transactions being made with Apple Pay, but Google does see what its Google Wallet users are buying and where those transactions are taking place. Information that they can later use to target advertising which remains their core business.

Some retailers like Rite Aid, CVS, Walmart, Best Buy and others have so far opted not to adopt Apple Pay as they are part of an existing payment solution called Merchant Customer Exchange. However, MCX will only be rolled out as of next year and the big question is whether iPhone 6 owners take their business to less restrictive retailers.
