'Suicide Squad' Sets Box Office Record With $135M Open

Time Warner's (TWX) "Suicide Squad" earned $135.1M in its U.S. debut over the August 7 weekend, nearly beating expectations for $115M-$145M and setting a new August record after the $94M debut of 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy."

In foreign markets, the film took $132M. The latest expansion of the DC Comics cinematic universe stars Will Smith, received a B+ in audience polls from CinemaScore, holds a 26% approval rating on reviews aggregator RottenTomatoes, and was produced with a reported budget of $175M.

BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Comcast's (CMCSA) "Jason Bourne" added $22.7M domestically in its second week, dipping about 62% from its opening and narrowly missing forecasts of $23M-$27.8M. STX Entertainment's "Bad Moms" grossed $14.2M, while Comcast's "The Secret Life Of Pets" earned $11.6M. Rounding out the top five, Viacom's (VIA) "Star Trek Beyond" brought in $10.2M in its third week, reaching a cumulative U.S. total of $127.9M.

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Disney (DIS), Fox (FOX), Lionsgate (LGF) and Sony (SNE).
