Introduction
IonQ (IONQ), a constituent in the MunAiMarkets Pure-Play Quantum Computing Portfolio, soared 7.5% today, June 26th, in reaction to its showcasing yesterday of the first known simulation of a process called “neutrinoless double-beta decay” using its quantum computer. This demonstration highlights the real-world potential of IonQ's hardware in cutting edge science.
What Is Neutrinoless Double-beta Decay?
According to Wikipedia, in standard double-beta decay, a nucleus emits two electrons and two antineutrinos. In the neutrinoless version, however, no neutrinos are emitted implying that the neutrino is its own antiparticle. Being able to detect this extremely rare nuclear process, as IonQ has just done, is revolutionizing our understanding of particle physics. Specifically, it:
- violates the lepton number conservation, a fundamental rule in the Standard Model of physics;
- helps explain why the universe is made mostly of matter and not antimatter; and
- provides clues about the absolute mass of neutrinos, which remains one of the biggest open questions in physics.
Despite decades of searching, this decay has never been observed in nature but IonQ’s quantum simulation of the process has given scientists new tools to explore it.
About IonQ Inc.
IonQ is planning to build a network of quantum computers accessible via the cloud using trapped-ion technology in its processing units which relies on suspending ions in space using electromagnetic fields, and transmitting information through the movement of those ions in a “shared trap”.
