Pure-Play Plant-Based Food Stocks Index Going From Bad To Worse

There are only 5 pure-play plant-based food stocks in the fledgling fake meat, dairy, egg, and seafood sector that have a market capitalization of at least $100M and less than $1B, and they are tracked in the munKNEE Pure-Play Plant-Based Food Stocks Index. 

Below is the stock price performance of the index and each of the constituents to date in August (MTD) and YTD presented in descending order based on their MTD performances:

  1. Else Nutrition (BABYF) is UP +9.3% MTD and is now DOWN -22.2% YTD
    • announced that it has signed an online distribution agreement with Walmart.com and will be expanding into Walmart’s E-commerce marketplace by Q4, 2021 with its Plant-Based Complete Nutrition products for Toddlers.
  2. Guru Organic (CSE: GURU; GUROF) is UP +3.0% MTD and is now DOWN -5.2% YTD
  3. The Very Good Food Company (VRYYF) is DOWN -3.9% MTD and is now DOWN -49.8% YTD
  4. Tattooed Chef (TTCF) is DOWN -13.4% MTD and is now DOWN -25.7% YTD
    • Bronstein, Gewirtz & Grossman, LLC is investigating potential claims that Tattooed Chef and certain of its officers and/or directors have violated federal securities laws.
    • Reported unfavorable Q2 financial results.
  5. Laird Superfood (LSF) is DOWN -22.9% MTD and is now DOWN -55.6% YTD
    • Announced that Paul Hodge, Jr. will begin transitioning to a non-executive role and stepping down as President and Chief Executive Officer once a successor is named.
    • Reported unfavorable Q2 financial results.

The average market capitalization of the above 5 stocks is $333M with an average stock price of $1.14/share.

Please note that:

  • Plant & Company Brands (VGANF), Eat Beyond Global (EATBF), Plant Fuel Life (CSE: FUEL), Modern Plant Based Foods (MDRNF) and Tofutti Brands (TOFB) have market capitalizations of less than $100M and, as such, are not included in the Index
  • and Beyond Meat (BYND), with a whopping $7.5B market capitalization and price of $121.24/share, is also excluded from the Index

as their inclusion would mask the performance of the other plant-based food stocks in the sector.
