Middle East Power Cooperation Brings Profits And Peace

In the Israeli stock market I have two goals, making money, and making peace. We are getting there. Here are remarks by an Israeli mogul after his firm signed a deal with a Palestinian mogul from the West Bank:

"I believe that a strong and stable economy between the parties will bring peace and stability to the whole region, and everyone will benefit from a prosperous economy and growth. Peace, economic cooperation, and mutual respect and trust are a joint endeavor. Economic cooperation, such as the agreement signed today, will help bring the countries closer and will contribute to building a basis for peace. It will be possible to create many new jobs and cooperation between businesses and enterprises. Together, these will link the common wish of all the parties to reach understandings and peace."

The quote is by Yitzhak Tshuva, chairman and chief shareholder of Delek Group, which signed a $1.2 bn contract Sunday to sell gas from Israel's Leviathan field to the Palestinian electricity company. (The translation is by Globes Israel website.)

Here are the details, released after Tel Aviv closed yesterday: Two subs of DGRLY, Delek Drilling LP and Avner Oil Exploration signed to supply over 20 years 4.75 bn cu meters of natural gas to the Palestine Power Generation Co plc. It will be burned in a future power plant to be constructed near Jenin in the West Bank. Delivery will begin when when Leviathan goes live and will be priced based on Brent crude with a floor price. Delek's partners including Noble Energy of Texas also signed off.

In other Middle Eastern news, Jordanian generics, licensed drugs, and injectables firm Hikma Pharma was one of the best performers in dollars in Britain (one of its primary listing sites, as HIC; the other is in Dubai) according to today's Financial Times, up 6.1% in Dec. HKMPY however was rated "sell" by the FT's stable-mate, The Investor's Chronicle. It is up another 2.9% in London trading today. The ADR hasn't traded this year but the bid ask spread is $41.78-$42.44. We reported last week that UBS raised the share to a buy.
