This statistic highlights Microsoft’s (MSFT) LinkedIn and Surface Revenue starting from Q2 2017 till the latest quarter. Microsoft LinkedIn’s revenues have been growing steadily over the past several quarters and haven’t shown any signs of cyclical nature between 2017 and 2020. The software giant has been rolling out new features to drive its engagement even further. The company’s management noted during their Q1 FY20 earnings call that the platform saw record levels of engagement at a significant 660 million users. So, it’s likely that continued improvements in user engagement results in continued revenue growth for Microsoft’s LinkedIn division in the coming quarters as well.

Microsoft’s Surface division, on the other, has a cyclical element attached to it. It’s evident that the Surface Revenue peak out during Microsoft’s Q2 periods and eventually subside in the next two quarters. Apparently, Microsoft aligns its product releases to take advantage of its customer’s purchase trends in order further amplify its Q2 peaks. For instance, Microsoft unveiled a slew of new Surface products in October 2019 and expanded its product family. It would be interesting to see whether Microsoft is able to top its already-high Surface revenues in the subsequent Q2’s during 2020 and 2021. As the company’s base figures from past comparable periods starts to become huge, it will become increasingly difficult for Microsoft to continue growing its Surface Revenue at healthy rates in the coming quarters.

As far as absolute results go, Microsoft recorded $1.91 billion in LinkedIn revenues while its Surface revenue came in at $1.14 billion during Q1 FY20.
