Today I'm reviewing the first of five consumer defensive sector stocks striving to join my Volio folio. This could be my twenty-eighth pick for Volio!

That consumer defensive sector includes twelve industries all related to providing convenient packaged goods we've just gotta have. Industries like: beverages, brewed, soft, or distilled; confectioners; discount stores; education & training; farm products; food distribution; grocery stores; household & personal products; packaged goods; tobacco.

My subject today is a small-cap tobacco industry representative named, Vector Group Ltd Their trading ticker symbol is VGR. This is my first ever report about Vector Group Ltd.

Vector Group Ltd is a holding company whose subsidiaries--Liggett Group, Vector Tobacco, Zoom, and New Valley-- primarily sell tobacco products and invest in real estate. The Liggett Group and Vector Tobacco subsidiaries sell cigarettes, primarily in the discount segment, in the United States under brand names Eagle '20s, Pyramid, Grand Prix, Liggett Select, and Eve. Zoom sells electronic cigarettes in the United States.

New Valley, through its majority ownership in Douglas Elliman Realty, invests in real estate worldwide. It also operates the largest residential brokerage company in the New York City area and has additional operations in South Florida, Beverly Hills, Aspen, and Connecticut.

Tobacco accounts for more than half of total company revenue; real estate makes up the remainder.

The company was formerly known as Brooke Group Ltd. and changed its name to Vector Group Ltd. in May 2000.

Vector Group Ltd. was founded in 1873 and is based in Miami, Florida.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like Vector Group Ltd:

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest, or not.

Those three basic keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

VGR Price

Vector's price per share closed at $11.57 yesterday. A year ago their price was $10.59. Thus, in the past year, their market price increased $0.98 or a little over 9.25%

Assuming Vector's stock trades in the range of $9 to $15 this next year, its recent $11.57 price might rise by $2.43 to reach $14.00  by March 9, 2021, assuming upward price momentum kicks-in.

VGR Dividends

Omega's latest declared quarterly dividend was $0.20 payable March 30. That $0.20  Q dividend equates to an annual payout of $0.80 and yields 6.91% at yesterday's $11.57 share price.

VGR Gains?

Adding the $0.80 annual estimated dividend to my $2.43 estimate of Vector Group Ltd price upside shows a $3.23 potential gross gain, per share, which will be reduced by any costs to trade those shares.

Put a little under $1,000.00 today invested into Vector Group Ltd at its recent $11.57 price, would buy 86 shares of VGR.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost about $0.12 per share.

Subtract that $0.12 brokerage cost from the estimated $3.23 gross estimated gain per share results in a net gain of $3.11 X 86 shares = $267.46 or a 26.75% net gain on a $995.02 investment.

Therefore, Vector Group Ltd, whose trading ticker symbol is VGR shows a possible 26.75% net gain including a 6.91% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.
