Daily Stock Pick: Trinity Industries - Wednesday, April 8

A portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3, 2019, named Volio, will eventually hold 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Today I'm reviewing the third of four industrials sector stocks this week striving to join my Volio folio. This could be my thirty-second pick for Volio!

That industrials sector includes twenty-three industries all related to designing, fabricating and servicing stuff we want, know and use. The industrials industries range from aerospace and defense to waste management with all the transportation, business services, and equipment required in between.

My subject today is a mid-cap diversified industrial company named, Trinity Industries Inc. Their trading ticker symbol is TRN. This is my second report on Trinity Industries Inc. Most recently you heard me describe this company on January 8 for this same Volio portfolio.

Trinity Industries Inc is a railroad company. It provides rail transportation products and services in North America.

It operates through three segments: Railcar Leasing and Management Services Group, Rail Products Group, and All Other. Those businesses provide products & services to the energy, transportation, chemical, and construction sectors.

The company sells or leases products and services through its own sales personnel and independent sales representatives.

Trinity Industries, Inc. was incorporated in 1933 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like Trinity Industries Inc:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest, or not.

Those three basic keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

TRN Price

Trinity's price per share closed at $16.64 yesterday. A year ago their price was $23.00. Market price has dropped $6.36 or nearly 27%.

Assuming Trinity's stock trades in the range of $10 to $22 this next year, its recent $16.64 price might rise by $3.36 to reach $20.00  by April 8, 2021.

TRN Dividends

Trinity's most recent declared quarterly dividend was $0.19 payable April 30th. That $0.19 Q dividend shows an annual payout of $0.76 to yield 4.57% at yesterday's $16.64 share price.

TRN Gains?

Adding the $0.76 annual estimated dividend to my $3.36 estimate of Trinity Industries Inc price upside shows a $4.12 potential gross gain, per share, reduced by any costs to trade those shares.

Put a little under $1,000.00 today in Trinity Industries Inc at the $16.64  share price, buys 60 shares.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost about $0.17 per share.

Subtract that $0.17 brokerage cost from my estimated $4.12 gross gain per share results in a net gain of $3.95 X 60 shares = $237.00 or a 23.7% net gain on a $998.40 investment.

Therefore, Trinity Industries Inc, whose trading ticker symbol is TRN shows a possible 23.7% net gain including a 4.57% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past performance and supposition. Only time and money invested will tell if Trinity Industries Inc is worth the expenditure.
