Daily Stock Pick: Main Street Capital - Tuesday March 24

A portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3, 2019, is named Volio. It will eventually hold 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Today I'm reviewing the second of five financial services sector stocks striving to join my Volio folio. This could be my thirtieth pick for Volio!

That financial services sector includes twenty industries ranging from Asset Management to 8 kinds of Banks, Credit, Exchanges, 6 kinds of Insurance, Savings, and all such financial concerns.

My subject today is a small-cap asset management company named, Main Street Capital Corp Their trading ticker symbol is MAIN. This is my third ever report on Main Street Capital Corp. My most recent MAIN report was May 22, 2019.

Main Street Capital Corp is an investment firm engaged in providing customized debt and equity financing to lower middle-market companies and debt capital to middle-market companies.

The investment portfolio of the company is typically made to support management buyouts, recapitalizations, growth financings, refinancings and acquisitions of companies that operate in diverse industry sectors.

The group invests in secured debt investments, equity investments, warrants and other securities of the lower middle market and middle-market companies based in the US. Business is functioned through the U.S region and it derives the majority of the income from the source of fee, commission, and interest.

The company was founded in Houston, TX in the mid-1990s.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like Main Street Capital Corp:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest, or not.

Those three basic keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

MAIN Price

Main Street's price per share closed at $16.08 yesterday. A year ago their price was $37.41. Thus, in the past year, their market price dropped $21.33 or just over 57%.

Assuming Main Street's stock trades in the range of $10 to $25 this next year, its recent $16.08 price might rise by $3.92 to reach $20.00 by March 24, 2021, assuming upward price momentum returns.

MAIN Dividends

Main Street's last declared monthly dividend was $0.205 payable April 15th. That $0.205 M dividend results in an annual payout of $2.46 to yield 15.3% at yesterday's $16.08 share price.

MAIN Gains?

Adding the $2.46 annual estimated dividend to my $3.92 estimate of Main Street Capital Corp price upside shows a $6.38 potential gross gain, per share, which will be reduced by any costs to trade those shares.

If we put a little under $1,000.00 today in Main Street Capital Corp at its recent $16.08 price, we'd buy 62 shares of MAIN.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost us  $0.16 per share.

Subtract that $0.16 brokerage cost from my estimated $6.38 gross gain per share results in a net gain of $6.22 X 62 shares = $385.64 or a 38.56% net gain on a $996.96 investment.

Therefore, Main Street Capital Corp, whose trading ticker symbol is MAIN shows a possible 38.56% net gain including a 15.3% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past performance and supposition. Only time and money invested will tell if Main Street Capital Corp is worth your time and money.
