Daily Stock Pick: Leggett & PLatt

I'm now looking for a third consumer cyclical sector representative for my new Ivy portfolio.

That cyclicals sector includes twenty-eight industries ranging from Advertising Agencies to Apparel, Autos, Broadcasting, Department Stores, Gambling, Leisure, Lodging, Packaging, Personal Services, Shoes, Restaurants, Rubber, Plastics, Textiles, and all such consumer aimed enterprises.

Today I'm reviewing a mid-cap home furnishings and fixtures company, named Leggett & Platt Inc Its trading ticker symbol is LEG.

Leggett & Platt Inc is a manufacturer that conceives designs and produces engineered components and products found in homes, offices, retail stores, automobiles, and commercial aircraft.

It operates through four segments: Residential Products, Furniture Products, Industrial Products, and Specialized Products.

The Residential Products segment offers innersprings, wire forms, and machines to shape wire into various types of springs; as well as quilting machines; and structural fabrics, carpet cushions, and geo components. It serves manufacturers of finished bedding, upholstered furniture, packaging, filtration, and draperies; retailers and distributors of carpet cushions; and contractors, landscapers, road construction companies, and government agencies using geo components.

The Furniture Products segment offers molded plywood components;  steel mechanisms and hardware, and springs and seat suspensions. It serves upholstered and office furniture manufacturers; department stores and big box retailers; e-commerce retailers; and mattress and furniture retailers.

The Industrial Products segment offers drawn wires, bedding and furniture components, automotive seat suspension systems, and steel rods. It serves packaging and baling companies, mechanical spring manufacturers, and wire distributors.

The Specialized Products segment offers mechanical and pneumatic lumbar support and massage systems, seat suspension systems, motors and actuators, and cables; and engineered hydraulic cylinders. It serves automobile and mobile equipment OEMs, and aerospace suppliers.

The company sells its products through sales representatives and distributors.

Leggett & Platt, Incorporated was founded in 1883 and is headquartered in Carthage, Missouri.

I use three key data points to gauge the value of any dividend equity like Leggett & Platt Inc:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest.

Those first three primary keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

LEG Price

Leggett & Platt's price per share closed at $40.00 Yesterday. A year ago its price was $47.83. So price dropped $7.83 per share last year, or about 16.3%.

Assuming Leggett & Platt's stock trades in the range of $32 to $48 next year,  Leggett & Platt's recent $40 price could pick up by $4 and go to $44.00 by late-January, 2020.

LEG Dividends

Leggett & Platt's most recent Quarterly dividend was $0.38 paid January 15th.

That $0.38 quarterly payout equates to a  $1.52 annual payout and a yield of 3.8% at Friday's $40.00 closing price.

Gains For LEG?

Adding the $1.52 annual estimated dividend to my estimated  $4.00 annual price estimate for Leggett & Platt Inc shows a $5.52 potential gross annual gain, per share, which will be reduced by costs to trade those shares.

Say we put  $1,000.00 today at the $40.00 recent stock price would buy us 25 Leggett & Platt shares.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale costs $0.40 per share.

Subtract that $0.40 brokerage cost from the estimated $5.52 gross annual gain leaves a net gain of $5.12 X 25 shares

= $128.00

for a 12.8% net gain on a $1,000.00 investment.

Therefore, Leggett & Platt Inc whose trading ticker symbol is LEG, now shows a possible net gain of 12.8% including its estimated 3.8% dividend yield.

Seven brokers cover this stock:

Three brokers say "Buy" LEG

Two think LEG will "outperform".

Two say "Hold" your LEG shares

Therefore, you can look at Leggett & Platt Inc and see it has made money, is making money, and could make 12.8% over the next year including its 3.8% estimated dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to determine.
