Daily Stock Analysis: Unum Group

Today we look at a mid-cap life insurance company named Unum Group. Its trading ticker symbol is UNM. This is my first report on Unum Group for this portfolio.

Unum Group is a provider of group and individual income protection insurance products in the United States and the United Kingdom.

It is the largest domestic disability insurer, with the majority of premiums generated from employer plans. The company also offers a complementary portfolio of other insurance products, including long-term care insurance, life insurance, and employer- and employee-paid group benefits.

The firm markets its products primarily through brokers.

The company was founded in 1848 and is based in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like Unum Group:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Those three basic keys best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

UNM Price

Unum's price per share closed at $23.88 yesterday. A year ago its price was $27.03. Price per share fell $3.25 or about 11.7% last year.

If Unum's stock trades in the range of $10 to $30 this next year, its recent $23.88 price might rise by $2.12 to reach $26.00 by February 3, 2022.

UNM Dividends

Unum's most recently declared quarterly dividend was $0.285 payable on February 19th. Dividends are estimated to total $1.14 per share annually and yield 4.77% at yesterday's $23.88 closing price.

UNM Gains?

Adding the $1.14 annual Unum Group anticipated dividend to my $2.12 most optimistic price upside shows a $3.26 potential gross gain, per share, to be reduced by any costs to trade the shares.

Put little over $1,000.00 today in Unum Group  at $23.88 per share and we'd buy 42 shares of UNM stock.

A $10 broker fee (if charged) paid half at purchase and half at sale might cost us about $0.24 per share.

Subtract that maybe $0.24 brokerage cost from my estimated  $3.26 gross gain per share results in a net gain of $3.02 X 42 shares = $126.84 for a 12.7% net gain on a $1.002.96 investment.

Unum Group shows a possible 12.7% net gain including a 4.77% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

All of the estimates above are speculation based on the past history of Unum Group. Only time and money invested in this stock will determine its worth.
