The Coca-Cola Company (KO) announced today the launch of 100% recycled plastic bottles in Canada, with all 500 ml sparkling beverages bottles – including flagship brands Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta – in the country using 100% recycled plastic, excluding caps and labels, by early 2024.
According to the company, the move will save 7.6 million pounds of new plastic in 2024, and reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 7,000 metric tons annually.
Coca-Cola said that the new launch will support its World Without Waste goal of making bottles with 50% recycled content by 2030. Announced in 2018, the sustainable packaging platform also includes a goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of a bottle or can for every one the company sells globally by 2030, and to make 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025. The company now offers 100% recycled plastic bottles in over 40 markets.
Kurt Ritter, Vice President & General Manager, Sustainability, Coca‑Cola North America, said:
“We hope that transitioning our 500mL sparkling portfolio to 100% recycled plastic will increase the amount of high-quality, food-grade, recycled plastic available in Canada and, ultimately, enable us to offer more of our brands in this sustainable format.”
The new 100% recycled plastic bottles will be produced by Coke Canada Bottling at manufacturing facilities across the country, and will feature “Recycle Me Again” messaging to drive consumer awareness and encourage bottle recycling.
Todd Parsons, CEO, of Coca‑Cola Canada Bottling Limited, said:
“We’re proud to partner with The Coca‑Cola Company on our transition to 100% recycled plastic bottles across Canada. We’re on a journey to be the leading beverage partner in Canada, and one of the ways we’re doing that is by earning our social license to operate by driving a circular economy for our packaging. Every one of these 100% recycled plastic bottles represents meaningful progress on that journey.”
