Cannabis Central: Tuesday's Pure-Play Pot Stock Index Performance Was A Mirror Image Of Monday's

The munKNEE Pure-Play* Pot Stock Index was a complete reversal of Monday (-2.3%) going UP 2.2% on Tuesday. 19 of the 25 constituents went UP and 6 went DOWN in price. In addition, all 3 index categories went UP as well. The winners and losers are as follows:

Index Performance

The constituents in the Index operate in 3 categories based on their primary area of focus in the cannabis industry and the constituents within each category are identified below with how each of the categories did along with those stocks within each category that changed price by 5% or more:

  1. The Vertically Integrated (i.e. Seed-to-Sale) Category went up 2.2%. The category consists of  22 index constituents that grow, process, and sell cannabis and hemp flower and related products.
    1. The Canadian Licensed Producer (LPs) Sub-Category went up 5.2% on Tuesday vs. -3.5% on Monday.  4 of the 7 index constituents within the category changed prices by 5% or more, namely: 
      1. Organigram (OGI) +10.1% (-5.8% on Monday)
      2. Tilray (TLRY) +6.8% (-5.2%)  
      3. Aurora (ACB) +6.8% (-3.5%)
      4. Canopy (CGC) +5.8% (-4.7%)
    2. The U.SNon-Hemp Multi-State Operator (MSOs) Sub-Category went up 0.9% vs. -1.4% on Monday with only one of the 13 index constituents in the category changing price by 5% or more, namely:
      1. TerrAscend (TRSSF) -5.2% (-4.4%)
    3. The Hemp Seed-to-Sale MSO Sub-Category went up 4.9% vs. - 5.3% on Monday with one of the two index constituents in the category changing in price by 5% or more, namely:
      1. Charlotte's Web (CWBHF) +5.3% (-5.7%)
  2. The Extraction Category went up 2.5% vs. -4.5% on Monday. This category focuses on the extraction of cannabis compounds and their infusion into consumer products. Neither of the 2 index constituents within the category changed price by 5% or more.
  3. The Consumption Devices Category went up 3.6% vs. -3.7% on Monday. This category has only one index constituent, Greenlane  (GNLN), which is focused on developing and selling personal consumption devices for cannabis consumers, such as vape pens and inhalers.

  • *The 25 pure-play constituents in the PPSI are just that, pure, deriving 100% of their revenue from the sale of cannabis or cannabis-related products.
    • Unlike every marijuana ETF (see this TalkMarkets article) and every other cannabis tracking index (see this TalkMarkets article), the PPSI excludes "wanna-be" companies that currently generate little, if any, of their revenue from the cannabis industry so as to reflect the true health of the marijuana industry in the U.S. and Canada.
    • As such, the following 9 companies, while trading well above the minimum Index listing criteria of US$1/share, are excluded: GW Pharmaceuticals, Abbvie, Arena Pharmaceuticals, GrowGeneration, Scotts Miracle-Gro, Innovative Industrial Properties REIT, New Age Beverages, Alcanna, and Alkerna.
  • The average market capitalization of the 25 constituents in the munKNEE PPSI is US$1.5B.
  • 10 constituents have market caps ranging between $1.0B and $10.0B; 4 have market caps between $500M and $999M and 11 constituents have market caps ranging between $100M and $499M.
