Cannabis Central: Revised Non-Penny Pot Stock Index Declined 1.4% Friday

The Non-Penny Pot Stock Index (NPSI) declined 1.4% on Friday with only eight of the 36 constituents going up, 27 going down and one having no change in price. In addition, eight of the nine sector categories advanced. Below are the details.

300+ cannabis companies have securities that trade on the various stock exchanges in Canada and the United States but, with:

  • 1 constituent filing for bankruptcy earlier in the week (Pyxus International),
  • 1 constituent (Abacus Health Products) being bought out by another (Charlotte's Web) and
  • 1 constituent (Harvest Health & Recreation) dropping below US$1/share

Only 36 companies (just 12% of the total) now make up the Non-penny Pot Stock Index (NPSI).

On Friday only one constituent, namely cbdMD (YCBD), advanced beyond US$5/share (+22.6%) and only one constituent, namely Village Farms (VFF), declined more than US$5/share (-7.8%). 1 stock remained unchanged in price while the remaining 33 constituents had price changes of less than 5%.

  • The official definition of a "penny" stock is one that trades below US$5/share but, when it comes to pot stocks, that is where 88% of the total universe trades, so the more literal definition of stocks that trade for less than US$1/share is used.
  • In addition, the constituents operate within 9 categories, based on their primary area of focus in the cannabis industry (see descriptions of each category here), and the constituents within each category are identified below with how each of the 9 categories did on Friday and, for interest sake, how each has performed YTD:

  2. Biotechnology Category: -1.1% (+21.2% YTD)
  3. Marijuana-Infused Products Category: -2.9% (+24.9% YTD)

  6. Real Estate Category: -3.4% (+27.7% YTD)
    • There is only 1 NPSI constituent in this category, namely: (IIPR) 
  7. Business Services/Consulting Category: -4.6% (-38.4% YTD)
    • There is only 1 NPSI constituent in this category, namely: (SHWZ)
  8. Tech & Media Category: +0.4% (+7.2% YTD)
    • There is only 1 NPSI constituent in this category, namely: (KERN)
  9. Hemp Products Category: +7.6% (-34.6% YTD)
    • The following 2 NPSI constituents are in this category, namely: (CWBHF; YCBD)
