Cannabis Central: Pure-Play Pot Stock Index Performance Flipped In October

21 of the 25 constituents in the munKNEE Pure-Play Pot Stock Index were UP in October while 4 were DOWN. That is the mirror image of the performance of the Index in September when 2 constituents went UP in price and 23 went DOWN.

For the record, the Pure-Play Pot Stock Index was UP 25.3% in May (see details here); DOWN 8.0% in June; UP 16.5% in July; UP a further 8.3% in August; DOWN 17.0% in September and UP 19.7% in October.

The major winners and losers for the month were:

21 of the Index constituents went UP in price in October of which 13 went UP by 10% or more, as follows:

  • 3 constituents went UP by 30% or more, namely:
    1. Harvest Health (HRVSF) +44.8% (-16% in September)
    2. TerrAscend (TRSSF) +34.0% (-10.9%)
    3. Canopy Growth (CGC) +31.1% (-13.3%)
  • 4 constituents went UP between 20% and 30%, namely:
    1. Curaleaf (CURLF) +29.0% (-13.3%)
    2. Trulieve (TCNNF) +27.2% (-18.9%)
    3. Rubicon (ROMJF) +23.9% (-1.9%
    4. Green Thumb (GTBIF) +21.5% (-15.0%)
  • 6 constituents went UP between 10% and 20%, namely:
    1. Cresco (CRLBF) +17.9% (-12.0%)
    2. Tilray (TLRY) +17.7% (-27.7%)
    3. Charlotte's Web (CWBHF) +16.4% (-29.8%)
    4. Organigram (OGI) +14.3 (-16.7%)
    5. Ayr (AYRSF) +13.1% (+3.1%)
    6. Planet 13 (PLNHF) +11.9% (-18.8%)

Major Losers 

Of the 4 Index constituents that went DOWN in price in October only 1 went DOWN in excess of 10%, namely, Aurora (ACB) -12.9% on the heels of a -52.6% in September.

The munKNEE.com Pure-Play Pot Stock Index includes companies doing business in three categories based on their primary area of focus in the cannabis industry. The categories are identified below with how they performed given the performance of the stocks in the Index that make up each category:

  1. The Vertically Integrated (i.e. Seed-to-Sale) Category has 22 index constituents that grow, process, and sell cannabis and hemp flower and related products and it went UP 21.3% in October (-16.5% in September).
    • the 7 Canadian Licensed Producer (LPs) index constituents  (ACBCGCAPHACRONOGIROMJF and TLRY) went UP 15.8%, on average, in October (-22.1% in September).
    • the 13 U.S. Multi-State Operator (MSOs) index constituents (ACRDF; ACRHF; AYRSF; CCHWF; CRLBF; CURLF; GTBIF; HRVSFJUSHF; PLNHFSHWZTCNNF and TRSSF) went UP 24.7%, on average, in October (-12.7% in September).
    • the 2 hemp seed-to-sale MSO index constituents (CWBHF and YCBD) went UP 10.0%, on average, in October (-25.3% in September).
  2. The Extraction Category has 2 index constituents, (NEPT and VLNCF), focused on the extraction of cannabis compounds and their infusion into consumer products and they went DOWN 5.7%, on average in October on the heels of -25.6% in September.
  3. The Consumption Devices Category has only 1 index constituent  (GNLN) focused on developing and selling personal consumption devices for cannabis consumers such as vape pens and inhalers and it went UP 8.5% (-27.0% in September).

*Please note: Only 25 of approximately 250 actively traded pot stocks fulfill the criteria for inclusion in the equal-weighted the Pure-Play Pot Stock Index in that the constituent stocks:

  • consistently trade for at least US$1/share and
  • derive 100% of their revenue from the sale of recreational and medicinal cannabis and consumption-related products.
