Fox's (FOX) "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" earned $28.5M in its U.S. debut over the October 2 weekend, beating estimates of $25M-$28M. The film, a Tim Burton-directed adaptation of the popular young-adult book series, received a B+ in audience polls from CinemaScore, holds a 64% approval rating on reviews aggregator RottenTomatoes, and was produced with a reported budget of $110M. In foreign markets, "Miss Peregrine's" took $36.5M.

Box Office Runners Up

Lionsgate's (LGF) "Deepwater Horizon," a retelling of the 2010 sinking of BP (BP) and Transocean's (RIG) oilrig of the same name, opened at $20.6M against expectations for $20M-$22M, with Piper Jaffray analyst Stan Meyers warning on Friday that it could open lighter than anticipated. The $110M film was scored A- in CinemaScore polls, holds a RottenTomatoes rating of 82%, and grossed $12.4M in international territories.

Meanwhile, Sony's (SNE) "The Magnificent Seven" added $15.7M in its second weekend, representing a drop of 55%.

Rounding out the top five, Time Warner's (TWX) "Storks" and "Sully" earned a respective $13.8M and $8.4M. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Viacom (VIA), Disney (DIS) and Comcast (CMCSA).
