This article focuses on AI and related (AI&R) news about the 12 best performing stocks (+140% YTD) and illustrates why they are well-positioned to continue to outperform in the months and years to come. 

  1. C3.ai (AI) has announced:
    • financial results for its fiscal first quarter ended July 31, 2023 (see here) and 
    • the launch of the C3 Generative AI Suite which includes 28 new domain-specific generative AI offerings available to address the unique needs of industries, business processes, and enterprise systems. 
  2. IonQ (IONQ), a quantum computing hardware and commercial quantum application development company, has:
    • entered into a strategic alliance with Zapata AI (a software company that plans on becoming a U.S. publicly listed company under the ticker symbol “ZPTA”) to achieve together that they believe they cannot individually uncover, namely, new potential advantages of quantum computing that could help solve complex real-world business problems.
  3. Marvell Technology (MRVL) has caught the attention of CNBC’s Jim Cramer echoing Goldman Sachs (GS) U.S. equity strategist David Kostin's belief that Marvell will be a long-term beneficiary of AI adoption. adding that Marvell is “sitting on a gold mine” as its semiconductors and other equipment are essential to building out the nascent AI tech.
  4. Meta Platforms (META), the parent of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it is:
    • set to unveil several generative AI chatbots with personalities, apparently with an eye toward attracting young users, and is
    • working on a new artificial intelligence system intended to be as powerful as the most advanced model offered by OpenAI for release next year.
  5. Nvidia (NVDA) has expanded collaboration with VMware (VMW) to offer hundreds of thousands of financial services, healthcare, and manufacturing customers the full-stack software and computing they need to unlock the potential of generative AI using custom applications built with their own data.
  6. Palantir (PLTR), in partnership with global trading house Trafigura, has:
    • launched a platform to calculate carbon emissions in supply chains for the energy sector with oil majors such as BP (BP) and Ecopetrol (EC) becoming its first users.
  7. Splunk (SPLK) is being purchased by Cisco (CSCO) for approximately $28 billion in equity value with the intent to move the organizations from threat detection and response to threat prediction and prevention and become one of the world's largest software companies and accelerate Cisco's business transformation to more recurring revenue.
  8. Spotify (SPOT) is introducing new ChatGPT capabilities with the use of Microsoft-backed (MFST) OpenAI's newly released voice generation technology that keeps the speaker's distinctive speech characteristics. 
  9. Symbotic (SYM) is a leader in warehouse automation (a category estimated to be worth $350 billion by its management) and has:
    • attracted Walmart (NYSE: WMT) which is integrating Symbotic's robotics platform  across all its 42 regional distribution centers as part of its supply chain modernization initiative and has
    • established a 35/65 $100 million joint venture with SoftBank (SOBKF) which is planning to buy $7.5 billion of Symbotic’s AI-powered systems for its warehouses which will be in addition to Symbotic’s $12 billion of contracts for system deployments already in hand.
  10. Tesla (TSLA) recently showcased a series of groundbreaking features (see video here) that have set its Optimus robot apart from the competition, outshining even Boston Dynamics’ celebrated Atlas, by demonstrating its unique prowess in tasks ranging from yoga to object manipulation.
  11. Uber (UBER) is developing an AI-powered chatbot for Uber Eats that will offer recommendations to users and offer them a quicker way to place orders. It’s unknown when Uber plans to launch the chatbot publicly.
  12. Upstart (UPST) leverages its AI models and cloud applications to approve borrowers' personal loans, automotive retail and refinance loans, and small-dollar “relief” loans and has:
    • reported in its second quarter 2023 results (see here) that it sees itself as being "in the pole position to lead the industry to an AI-enabled future that dramatically improves access to credit for hundreds of millions of Americans".

Other News of Note:

  • University of Washington researchers have developed a shape-changing smart speaker that uses self-deploying microphones to mute certain areas or separate simultaneous conversations and separate their speech. The team published its findings Sept. 21 in Nature Communications.
  • Amazon (AMZN) is investing up to $4B in AI startup Anthropic, an AI safety and research company, and will have a minority ownership position in the company.
  • Microsoft (MSFT) backed OpenAI is considering a share sale that would value the startup behind ChatGPT at $80-to-$90B.
  • Palo Alto Networks (PANW) is in advanced negotiations to purchase Israeli startup Dig Security in a deal valued at $300-$400M in addition to Talon Cyber Security, another Israeli cyber startup, in a deal valued at $600-$700M. 
  • DoorDash (DASH) has developed voice ordering capabilities incorporating AI that will enable select operators the potential to increase their sales by answering all calls and pursuing incremental revenue opportunities.
  • Getty (GETY) announced on September 25th that it is launching Generative AI by Getty Images, a new tool that pairs the company's best‑in‑class creative content with the latest AI technology.
