Daily Stock Pick: The GEO Group

This week, I'm looking for a second stalwart healthcare sector representative for my new Ivy portfolio.

That healthcare sector includes ten industries all related to testing, diagnosing and treating what ails us. Healthcare industries are: biotechnology; diagnostics & research; drug manufacturers - major and - specialty & generic; healthcare plans; long-term care facilities; medical care; medical devices; medical distribution; medical supplies.

Today I'm reviewing a mid-cap healthcare facilities real estate investment trust, The GEO Group Inc. Its trading ticker symbol is GEO.

The GEO Group Inc is a healthcare facility real estate investment trust. It is engaged in ownership, leasing and management of correctional, detention and re-entry facilities, and the provision of community based services.

It is the first fully integrated equity real estate investment trust specializing in the design, financing, development, and operation of correctional, detention, and community reentry facilities around the globe. GEO is the world's leading provider of diversified correctional, detention, community reentry, and electronic monitoring services to government agencies worldwide with operations in the United States, Australia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. GEO's worldwide operations include the ownership and/or management of 136 facilities totaling approximately 96,000 beds, including projects under development, with a growing workforce of approximately 23,000 professionals.

The GEO Group Inc was founded in 1984 as the Wackenhut Corrections Corporation a division of The Wackenhut Corp. As the company acquired additional facilities to own and manage throughout the world, the company name was changed to The GEO Group Inc in 2003 and began operating as a REIT  in 2013. Since 2003 the company has held ben distinguished as a Florid Trend Magazine top 250 public company.

I use three key data points to gauge the value of any dividend equity or fund like he GEO Group Inc (GEO):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, four more keys will finally unlock equity or fund in which to invest.

But those first three primary keys, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

GEO Price

GEO's price per share was $19.61 at Friday's market close. A year ago its price was $23.57 for a price drop of $3.96 per share for the year or a 16.8% annual tumble.

Assuming GEO's stock will trade in the range of $18 to $28 next year, GEO's recent $19.61 price could recover by $1.39 and grow to $21.00 by late-December, 2019.

GEO Dividends

GEO's most recent monthly dividend was $0.47 declared October 15th and paid out, November 2nd.

That $0.47 quarterly stipend equates to an annual amount of $1.88 yielding 9.59% at Friday's closing $19.61 price.

Gains For GEO?

Adding the $1.88 annual estimated dividend to my estimated $1.39 annual price upside estimate for The GEO Group Inc totals up to a $3.27 potential gross annual per share gain, which will be reduced by costs to trade the shares.

For a little over $1,000.00 invested today at the $19.61 recent price, we would buy 51 GEO shares.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale costs us $0.20 per share.

Subtract that $0.20 brokerage cost from the estimated $3.27 gross annual gain leaves a net gain of $3.07 X 51 shares

= $154.02

for a 15.4% net gain on a $1,000.11 investment.

Therefore, The GEO Group Inc whose trading ticker symbol is GEO, now shows a possible 15.4% net gain including a 9.59% dividend yield.

Three brokers cover this stock:

One broker says "buy" GEO

One broker says GEO will "outperform" peers.

One broker says "hold" GEO shares.

The three covering brokers are more optimistic for GEO's price recovery than I am.

They strike a median price upside at almost $28.33 next year. Which, you will recall is $7.33 higher than my $21 estimated one year target.

Therefore, you can look at The GEO Group Inc and see it has made money, is making money, but could rise to net a 15 to 25% net annual gain including that respectable 9.59% estimated dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to determine if The GEO Group Inc is worth your time and money.
