Tech billionaire Elon Musk has told media that his artificial intelligence startup xAI is looking to build a massive supercomputer to run the next version of its AI chatbot Grok as early as next year. The Information reported Saturday, citing a presentation to investors.

Elon Musk noted that xAI will require as many as 100,000 specialized semiconductors to train and run the next Grok version, and a “gigafactory of compute” is expected to house those chips.

Musk is the CEO of Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX (SPACE), has added that he wants to get the proposed supercomputer running by the fall of 2025 and take personal responsibility for delivering the product as scheduled. According to The Information, the device will connect Nvidia’s (NVDA) flagship H100 graphics processing units (GPUs), and once operational, it will be at least four times the size of the biggest GPU clusters that exist today!

The report added that xAI could collaborate with Oracle (ORCL) to develop the massive computer. In late 2023, xAI unveiled Grok, as a rival chatbot to Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing AI.

We need some government regulation of this AI.  Yes, it offers tremendous opportunities for advancement, efficiencies and technological breakthroughs. But it is also dangerous to build something that can be smarter than us, and find that we are the problem.
