Amazon is training humanoid robots to deliver packages. The Information reports that the company has set up a “humanoid park” at its robotics facility near Seattle to simulate real-world delivery scenarios. The test environment includes obstacle courses and a Rivian delivery van.

Agility Robotics’ Digit is one of the models being tested, as is the G1 from Chinese robotics firm Unitree. Amazon is developing AI software that would allow the robots to navigate sidewalks, walk up stairs, and drop off packages. These robots could eventually ride along in delivery vans, hop out, and complete the final leg of the trip on foot.

The initiative is part of Amazon’s broader effort to automate logistics. The company has already deployed more than 750,000 robots in its warehouses and has experimented with drone deliveries. While there are those who will see this as a way for Amazon to hire fewer people (or let a bunch go), adding humanoids to the mix would reduce the physical demands on workers and address labor shortages during peak seasons.

This is a test, not a product. There’s no rollout date. There’s no guarantee it will scale. But considering Amazon’s size – if it works – it will weave humanoid robots into the fabric of our world. Are you ready for C-3PO to ring your doorbell?
