Reversal In Miners Fortune As Dollar Gains Sees FTSE Reverse Lower

Miners led the way as the FTSE 100 in the UK began positively on Tuesday, with higher metal prices and investor optimism driven by weak domestic wages data. The FTSE 100 index of top-performing companies rose by 0.6%, reaching its peak level since October 18th. Industrial and precious metal miners rose 1.5% and 1.2% respectively, driven by higher metal prices caused by a weaker US dollar, however, as the US Dollar reversed course post US inflation data the FTSE ceded gains to revert to the flatline trading 0.03%.

On the negative side of the ledger shares of UK investment platforms have fallen after the country's financial regulator raised concerns about the level of interest and fees charged by some platforms. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) did not specifically name any platforms, but has given companies until February 29th to make any necessary changes. Hargreaves Lansdown, a leading investment platform, saw its shares drop by 8% and was the top percentage loser on the FTSE 100 index.

Rightmove, the biggest property portal in the UK, sits at the top of the blue chip index +2.4% as investors continue to support initiatives with the firm planning to broaden its mortgage services by providing broker advice to individuals looking to purchase a home through its website. The company aims to generate £25 million ($31.2 million) from this segment by 2028.Since last year, the FTSE 100 company has been collaborating with Nationwide Building Society to provide a digital mortgage application process via the Rightmove website.
