Alibaba Releases ESG Report: 1.419 Million Tons Of Carbon Reduction In FY2023

On July 24, Alibaba Group released its "Environmental, Social, and Governance Report (2023)." The report revealed that in the fiscal year 2023, the company's net operational emissions reached 4.681 million tons, a decrease of 12.9% compared to the previous year.

The company's operational carbon reduction amounted to 1.419 million tons, an increase of 128.9% year-on-year. Furthermore, Alibaba also facilitated a reduction of 22.907 million tons of carbon emissions.

Alibaba Group was established in 1999 by 18 people led by Jack Ma, a former English teacher from Hangzhou, China. From the outset, the company’s founders shared a belief that the Internet would level the playing field by enabling small enterprises to leverage innovation and technology to grow and compete more effectively in the domestic and global economies.

Since launching its first website helping small and medium-sized enterprises in China to sell internationally, Alibaba Group has grown into a digital ecosystem with businesses comprising China commerce, international commerce, local consumer services, Cainiao, cloud, digital media and entertainment, innovation initiatives, and others.

Recently, the company released its "Environmental, Social, and Governance Report (2023)."

In terms of value chain emissions reduction, Alibaba implemented measures such as optimizing the supply chain, promoting electrification in land transportation, using clean energy, and encouraging low-carbon travel for employees. These actions resulted in a total carbon reduction of 400,000 tons.

Furthermore, by combining carbon elimination and offsetting programs, the carbon intensity of the value chain decreased from 9.2 tons per million RMB in the fiscal year 2022 to 8.7 tons per million RMB.

Regarding employee development, Alibaba Group boasts employees from over 60 countries and regions, with women comprising 49.1% of the workforce. In terms of corporate governance, 41.9% of management positions are held by women, as well as 25% of senior management positions, and 30% of the board members are women.

In this fiscal year, a total of 62,138 individuals utilized companion leave to spend time with their families, themselves, and their pets. Based on a series of actions and efforts, Alibaba Group has been recognized as one of the "Best Employers in the World 2022" by Forbes.

According to the report, Alibaba's ecosystem has directly or indirectly created over 70 million employment opportunities. The company serves more than 200,000 merchants and over 47 million buyers from over 190 countries and regions.

In driving sustainable public welfare initiatives, Alibaba motivates and supports its employees' active involvement in philanthropic actions. In the fiscal year 2023, employees collectively volunteered for a total of 250,144 hours. Over 110 teams participated in more than 1,000 public welfare activities focusing on themes such as nature conservation, animal protection, and education.

Furthermore, Alibaba's "Green Internet Plan" redirected around 80 million abnormal searches to public welfare advocacy and educational interfaces over the past year. These initiatives covered five major areas: safeguarding life and health, protecting wildlife, safeguarding minors, ensuring public safety, and protecting personal information security.

In this field, representative Chinese companies include JD.com, Pinduoduo, and Vipshop. Internationally, companies like Amazon and eBay also have e-commerce as their main business.
