In an encouraging development for the US economy, December 2023 witnessed the addition of 216,000 jobs, surpassing the downwardly revised November figure of 173,000 and significantly outperforming market predictions of 170,000. This positive trend highlights the resilience and ongoing recovery of the labor market.
The government sector led the employment gains with 52,000 new jobs, followed by significant contributions from the leisure and hospitality industry (40,000), healthcare (38,000), social assistance (21,000), and construction (17,000). These figures reflect a diversified strengthening across multiple sectors, indicating a broad-based recovery in the job market.
However, the transportation and warehousing sector experienced a setback, shedding 23,000 jobs. In contrast, other major industries such as mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, information, financial activities, and other services remained relatively stable with little change in employment levels.
The total job gain for 2023 amounted to 2.7 million, marking it as the smallest annual increase since 2019, with the exception of the pandemic-impacted year of 2020. This translates to an average monthly job creation of approximately 225,000.
A sector-wise breakdown reveals that the government sector added an average of 56,000 jobs per month in 2023, and the health care sector followed closely with an average of 55,000 monthly job additions. The leisure and hospitality sector, while adding 39,000 jobs on average per month, exhibited a slowdown from the 88,000 average monthly gain in 2022. Despite this, the sector’s employment levels are still trailing by 163,000 jobs compared to the pre-pandemic era of February 2020.
In conclusion, the December 2023 job report paints a picture of a robust and diverse job market in the United States, with notable gains in several key sectors. While there are areas of slowdown, particularly in leisure and hospitality, the overall employment landscape suggests a steady recovery trajectory.
